A Citizen of mighty PelfA
But much a Blockhead in himselfA
Disdain'd a Man of shining PartsB
Master of Sciences and ArtsB
Who left his Book scarce once a dayC
For sober Coffee Smoak or TeaD
Nor spent more Money in the TownE
Than bought when need requir'd a GownE
Which way of Living much offendsF
The Alderman who gets and spendsF
And grudges him the Vital AirG
Who drives no Trade and takes no CareG
Why Bookworm to him once he cry'dD
Why setting thus the World asideD
Dost thou thy useless Time consumeH
Enclos'd within a lonely RoomH
And poring damnify thy WitD
'Till not for Men or Manners fitD
Hop'st thou with urging of thy VeinI
To spin a Fortune from thy BrainI
Or gain a Patron that shall raiseJ
Thy solid State for empty PraiseJ
No trust not to your Soothings vileK
Receiv'd per me's the only StileK
Your Book's but frown'd on by My LordD
If Mine's uncross'd I reach his BoardD
-
In slighting Yours he shuts his HandD
Protracting Mine devolves the LandD
Then let Advantage be the TestD
Which of us Two ev'n Writes the bestD
Besides I often Scarlet wearG
And strut to Church just next the MayorL
Whilst rusty Black with Inch of BandD
Is all the Dress you understandD
Who in the Pulpit thresh to PleaseM
Whilst I below can snore at EaseM
Yet if you prove me there a SinnerL
I let you go without a DinnerL
This Prate was so beneath the SenceM
Of One who Wisdom cou'd dispenseM
Unheard or unreturn'd it pastD
But War now lays the City wasteD
And plunder'd Goods profusely fellN
By length of Pike not length of EllN
Abroad th' Inhabitants are forc'dD
From Shops and Trade and Wealth divorc'dD
-
The Student leaving but his BookO
The Tumult of the Place forsookO
In Foreign Parts One tells his TaleP
How Rich he'd been how quick his SaleP
Which do's for scanty Alms prevailP
The Chance of War whilst he deploresM
And dines at Charitable DoorsM
The Man of Letters known by FameQ
Was welcom'd wheresoe'er he cameQ
Still Potentates entreat his StayD
Whose Coaches meet him on the WayD
And Universities contestD
Which shall exceed or use him bestD
Amaz'd the Burgomaster seesM
On Foot and scorn'd such Turns as theseM
And sighing now deplores too lateD
His cumb'rous Trash and shallow PateD
Since loaded but with double ChestD
Of learned Head and honest BreastD
The Scholar moves from Place to PlaceM
And finds in every Climate GraceM
-
Wit and the Arts on that Foundation rais'dD
Howe'er the Vulgar are with Shows amaz'dD
Is all that recommends or can be justly prais'dD
