The Shepherd Piping To The Fishes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB CDECD FGFFG HIHJI KLKML NONNP QRQQR STSST

A Shepherd seeking with his LassA
To shun the Heat of DayB
Was seated on the shadow'd GrassA
Near which a flowing Stream did passA
And Fish within it playB
-
The Phillis he an Angle gaveC
And bid her toss the LineD
For sure quoth he each Fish must haveE
Who do's not seek to be thy SlaveC
A harder Heart than mineD
-
Assemble here you watry RaceF
Transportedly he criesG
And if when you behold her FaceF
You e'er desire to quit the PlaceF
You see not with my EyesG
-
But you perhaps are by the EarH
More easie to be caughtI
If so I have my Bagpipe hereH
The only Musick that's not dearJ
Nor in great Cities boughtI
-
So sprightly was the Tune he choseK
And often did repeatL
That Phillis tho' not up she roseK
Kept time with every thrilling CloseM
And jigg'd upon her SeatL
-
But not a Fish wou'd nearer drawN
No Harmony or CharmsO
Their frozen Blood it seems cou'd thawN
Nor all they heard nor all they sawN
Cou'd woo them to such TermsP
-
The angry Shepherd in a PettQ
Gives o'er his wheedling ArtsR
And from his Shoulder throws the NetQ
Resolv'd he wou'd a Supper getQ
By Force if not by PartsR
-
Thus stated Laws are always bestS
To rule the vulgar ThrongT
Who grow more Stubborn when CarestS
Or with soft Rhetorick addrestS
If taking Measures wrongT
