Soothing his Passions with a warb'ling SoundA
A Shepherd Swain lay stretch'd upon the GroundA
Whilst all were mov'd who their Attention lentB
Or with the Harmony in Chorus wentB
To something less than Joy yet more than dull ContentB
Between which two Extreams true Pleasure liesC
O'er run by Fools unreach'd at by the WiseC
But yet a fatal Prospect to the SeaD
Wou'd often draw his greedy Sight awayE
He saw the Barques unlading on the ShoreF
And guess'd their Wealth then scorn'd his little StoreF
Then wou'd that Little lose or else wou'd make it moreF
To Merchandize converted is the FoldG
The Bag the Bottle and the Hurdles soldG
The Dog was chang'd away the pretty SkellH
Whom he had fed and taught and lov'd so wellH
-
-
In vain the Phillis wept which heretoforeF
Receiv'd his Presents and his Garlands woreF
False and upbraided he forsakes the DownsI
Nor courts her Smiles nor fears the Ocean's FrownsI
For smooth it lay as if one single WaveJ
Made all the Sea nor Winds that Sea cou'd heaveK
Which blew no more than might his Sails supplyH
Clear was the Air below and Phoebus laugh'd on highH
With this Advent'rer ev'ry thing combinesL
And Gold to Gold his happy Voyage joinsM
But not so prosp'rous was the next EssayE
For rugged Blasts encounter'd on the wayE
Scarce cou'd the Men escape the Deep had all their PreyE
Our broken Merchant in the Wreck was thrownN
Upon those Lands which once had been his ownN
Where other Flocks now pastur'd on the GrassO
And other Corydons had woo'd his LassO
A Servant for small Profits there he turnsP
Yet thrives again and less and less he mournsQ
Re purchases in time th'abandon'd SheepR
Which sad Experience taught him now to keepR
When from that very Bank one Halcyon DayE
On which he lean'd when tempted to the SeaD
He notes a Calm the Winds and Waves were stillH
And promis'd what the Winds nor Waves fulfillH
A settl'd Quiet and Conveyance sureS
To him that Wealth by Traffick wou'd procureS
-
But the rough part the Shepherd now performsT
Reviles the Cheat and at the Flatt'ry stormsT
Ev'n thus quoth he you seem'd all Rest and EaseU
You sleeping Tempests you untroubl'd SeasU
That ne'er to be forgot that luckless HourV
In which I put my Fortunes in your Pow'rW
Quitting my slender but secure EstateX
My undisturb'd Repose my sweet RetreatY
For Treasures which you ravish'd in a DayE
But swept my Folly with my Goods awayE
Then smile no more nor these false Shews employH
Thou momentary Calm thou fleeting JoyH
No more on me shall these fair Signs prevailH
Some other Novice may be won to SailH
Give me a certain Fate in the obscurest ValeH
