The Man And His Horse Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABAAB CCDCCD EEFEEF GGGGGG GGHGGH GG

Within a Meadow on the wayA
A sordid Churl resolv'd to stayA
And give his Horse a BiteB
Purloining so his Neighbours HayA
That at the Inn he might not payA
For Forage all the NightB
-
With Heart's content th' unloaded SteedC
Began to neigh and frisk and feedC
For nothing more he car'dD
Since none of all his Master's breedC
E'er found such Pasture at their needC
Or half so well had far'dD
-
When in the turning of a HandE
Out comes the Owner of the LandE
And do's the Trespass eyeF
Which puts poor Bayard to a StandE
For now his Master do's commandE
Him to return and flyF
-
But Hunger quick'ning up his WitG
And Grass being sweeter than the BitG
He to the Clown reply'dG
Shall I for you this Dinner quitG
Who to my Back hard Burdens fitG
And to the Death wou'd rideG
-
No shou'd I as a Stray be foundG
And seiz'd upon forbidden GroundG
I'll on this Spot stand stillH
For tho' new Riders shou'd aboundG
Or did Mankind this Field surroundG
They cou'd but use me illH
-
Urge no Man to despair lest in the FitG
He with some Counterblow thy Head may hitG
