To the still Covert of a WoodA
About the prime of DayB
A Lyon satiated with FoodC
With stately Pace and sullen MoodC
Now took his lazy wayB
-
To Rest he there himself compos'dD
And in his Mind revolv'dE
How Great a Person it enclos'dD
How free from Danger he repos'dD
Though now in Ease dissolv'dD
-
Who Guard nor Centinel did needD
Despising as a JestD
All whom the Forest else did feedD
As Creatures of an abject BreedD
Who durst not him molestD
-
But in the Air a Sound he heardD
That gave him some dislikeF
At which he shook his grisly BeardD
Enough to make the Woods affeardD
And stretch'd his Paw to strikeF
-
When on his lifted Nose there fellG
A Creature slight of WingH
Who neither fear'd his Grin nor YellG
Nor Strength that in his Jaws did dwellG
But gores him with her StingH
-
Transported with th' Affront and PainI
He terribly exclaimsJ
Protesting if it comes againK
Its guilty Blood the Grass shall stainI
And to surprize it aimsJ
-
The scoffing Gnat now laugh'd aloudD
And bids him upwards viewL
The Jupiter within the CloudD
That humbl'd him who was so proudD
And this sharp Thunder threwL
-
That Taunt no Lyon's Heart cou'd bearM
And now much more he ravesN
Whilst this new Perseus in the AirM
Do's War and Strife again declareM
And all his Terrour bravesN
-
Upon his haughty Neck she ridesO
Then on his lashing TailP
Which need not now provoke his SidesO
Where she her slender Weapon guidesO
And makes all Patience failP
-
A Truce at length he must proposeQ
The Terms to be her OwnR
Who likewise Rest and Quiet choseQ
Contented now her Life to closeS
When she'd such Triumph knownR
-
You mighty Men who meaner ones despiseT
Learn from this Fable to become more WiseT
You see the Lyon may be vext with FliesT
