The Dog And His Master Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDE FFGGHHIIJJ KKJJLLMNOOPP

NO better Dog e'er kept his Master's DoorA
Than honest Snarl who spar'd nor Rich nor PoorB
But gave the Alarm when any one drew nighC
Nor let pretended Friends pass fearless byC
For which reprov'd as better Fed than TaughtD
He rightly thus expostulates the FaultE
-
To keep the House from Rascals was my ChargeF
The Task was great and the Commission largeF
Nor did your Worship e'er declare your MindG
That to the begging Crew it was confin'dG
Who shrink an Arm or prop an able KneeH
Or turn up Eyes till they're not seen nor seeH
To Thieves who know the Penalty of StealthI
And fairly stake their Necks against your WealthI
These are the known Delinquents of the TimesJ
And Whips and Tyburn testify their CrimesJ
-
But since to Me there was by Nature lentK
An exquisite Discerning by the ScentK
I trace a Flatt'rer when he fawns and leersJ
A rallying Wit when he commends and jeersJ
The greedy Parasite I grudging noteL
Who praises the good Bits that oil his ThroatL
I mark the Lady you so fondly toastM
That plays your Gold when all her own is lostN
The Knave who fences your Estate by LawO
Yet still reserves an undermining FlawO
These and a thousand more which I cou'd tellP
Provoke my Growling and offend my SmellP
