Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCBBDEFFGG AAHIJJKKLLMMNN OPQRIHSS TTUVPP WWXXSSPPYYZZ A2A2

POOR River now thou'rt almost dryA
What Nymph or Swain will near thee lieA
Since brought alas to sad DecayB
What Flocks or Herds will near thee stayB
The Swans that sought thee in thy PrideC
Now on new Streams forgetful rideC
And Fish that in thy Bosom layB
Chuse in more prosp'rous Floods to playB
All leave thee now thy Ebb appearsD
To waste thy sad Remains in TearsE
Nor will thy mournful Murmurs heedF
Fly wretched Stream with all thy speedF
Amongst those solid Rocks thy Griefs bestowG
For Friends like those alas thou ne'er did'st knowG
-
And thou poor Sun that sat'st on highA
But late the Splendour of the SkyA
What Flow'r tho' by thy Influence bornH
Now Clouds prevail will tow'rds thee turnI
Now Darkness sits upon thy BrowJ
What Persian Votary will bowJ
What River will her Smiles reflectK
Now that no Beams thou can'st directK
By watry Vapours overcastL
Who thinks upon thy Glories pastL
If present Light nor Heat we getM
Unheeded thou may'st rise and setM
Not all the past can one Adorer keepN
Fall wretched Sun to the more faithful DeepN
-
-
Nor do thou lofty Structure boastO
Since undermin'd by Time and FrostP
Since thou canst no Reception giveQ
In untrod Meadows thou may'st liveR
None from his ready Road will turnI
With thee thy wretched Change to mournH
Not the soft Nights or chearful DaysS
Thou hast bestow'd can give thee PraiseS
-
No lusty Tree that near thee growsT
Tho' it beneath thy Shelter roseT
Will to thy Age a Staff becomeU
Fall wretched Building to thy TombV
Thou and thy painted Roofs in Ruin mixtP
Fall to the Earth for That alone is fixtP
-
The same poor Man the same must beW
Thy Fate now Fortune frowns on theeW
Her Favour ev'ry one pursuesX
And losing Her thou all must loseX
No Love sown in thy prosp'rous DaysS
Can Fruit in this cold Season raiseS
No Benefit by thee conferr'dP
Can in this time of Storms be heardP
All from thy troubl'd Waters runY
Thy stooping Fabrick all Men shunY
All do thy clouded Looks declineZ
As if thou ne'er did'st on them shineZ
-
O wretched Man to other World's repairA2
For Faith and Gratitude are only thereA2
