Mussulman's Dream Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FFGGCCHHIIIIIIIIEEEI IIIIIIIIIWhere is that World to which the Fancy flies | A |
When Sleep excludes the Present from our Eyes | A |
Whose Map no Voyager cou'd e'er design | B |
Nor to Description its wild Parts confine | B |
Yet such a Land of Dreams We must allow | C |
Who nightly trace it tho' we know not how | C |
Unfetter'd by the Days obtruded Rules | D |
We All enjoy that Paradise of Fools | D |
And find a Sorrow in resuming Sense | E |
Which breaks some free Delight and snatches us from thence | E |

Thus in a Dream a Musselman was shown | F |
A Vizir whom he formerly had known | F |
When at the Port he bore deputed Sway | G |
And made the Nations with a Nod obey | G |
Now all serene and splendid was his Brow | C |
Whilst ready Waiters to his Orders bow | C |
His Residence an artful Garden seem'd | H |
Adorn'd with all that pleasant he esteem'd | H |
Full of Reward his glorious Lot appear'd | I |
As with the Sight our Dreamer's Mind was chear'd | I |
But turning next he saw a dreadful Sight | I |
Which fill'd his Soul with Wonder and Affright | I |
Pursu'd by Fiends a wretched Dervis fled | I |
Through scorching Plains which to wide Distance spread | I |
Whilst every Torture gloomy Poets paint | I |
Was there prepar'd for the reputed Saint | I |
Amaz'd at this the sleeping Turk enquires | E |
Why He that liv'd above in soft Attires | E |
Now roll'd in Bliss while t'other roll'd in Fires | E |
We're taught the Suff'rings of this Future State | I |
Th' Excess of Courts is likeliest to create | I |
Whilst solitary Cells o'ergrown with Shade | I |
The readiest way to Paradise is made | I |
True quoth the Phantom which he dream'd reply'd | I |
The lonely Path is still the surest Guide | I |
Nor is it by these Instances deny'd | I |
For know my Friend whatever Fame report | I |
The Vizier to Retirements wou'd resort | I |
Th' ambitious Dervis wou'd frequent the Court | I |
