How gayly is at first begunA
Our Life's uncertain RaceB
Whilst yet that sprightly Morning SunA
With which we just set out to runA
Enlightens all the PlaceB
-
How smiling the World's Prospect liesC
How tempting to go throughD
Not Canaan to the Prophet's EyesC
From Pisgah with a sweet SurprizeC
Did more inviting shewD
-
How promising's the Book of FateE
Till thoroughly understoodF
Whilst partial Hopes such Lots createE
As may the youthful Fancy treatG
With all that's Great and GoodF
-
How soft the first Ideas proveH
Which wander through our MindsC
How full the Joys how free the LoveI
Which do's that early Season moveH
As Flow'rs the Western WindsC
-
Our Sighs are then but Vernal AirJ
But April drops our TearsC
Which swiftly passing all grows FairJ
Whilst Beauty compensates our CareJ
And Youth each Vapour clearsC
-
But oh too soon alas we climbK
Scarce feeling we ascendL
The gently rising Hill of TimeK
From whence with Grief we see that PrimeK
And all its Sweetness endL
-
The Die now cast our Station knownM
Fond Expectation pastN
The Thorns which former Days had sownM
To Crops of late Repentance grownM
Thro' which we toil at lastN
-
Whilst ev'ry Care's a driving HarmO
That helps to bear us downP
Which faded Smiles no more can charmO
But ev'ry Tear's a Winter StormQ
And ev'ry Look's a FrownP
-
Till with succeeding Ills opprestN
For Joys we hop'd to findN
By Age too rumpl'd and undrestN
We gladly sinking down to restN
Leave following Crouds behindN
