When Poets gave their God in Crete a BirthA
Then Jupiter held Traffick with the EarthA
And had a Farm to Lett the Fine was highB
For much the Treas'ry wanted a SupplyB
By Danae's wealthy Show'r exhausted quite and dryB
But Merc'ry who as Steward kept the CourtC
So rack'd the Rent that all who made ResortC
Unsatisfy'd return'd nor could agreeD
To use the Lands or pay his secret FeeD
'Till one poor Clown thought subt'ler than the restE
Thro' various Projects rolling in his BreastE
Consents to take it if at his DesireF
All Weathers tow'rds his Harvest may conspireF
The Frost to kill the Worm the brooding SnowG
The filling Rains may come and Phoebus glowG
The Terms accepted sign'd and seal'd the LeaseH
His Neighbours Grounds afford their due EncreaseH
The Care of Heav'n the Owner's Cares may ceaseH
Whilst the new Tenant anxious in his MindI
Now asks a Show'r now craves a rustling WindI
To Raise what That had lodg'd that he the Sheaves may bindI
The Sun th'o'er shadowing Clouds the moistning DewsH
He with such Contrariety does chuseH
So often and so oddly shifts the SceneJ
Whilst others Load he scarce has what to GleanJ

O Jupiter with Famine pinch'd he criesH
No more will I direct th' unerring SkiesH
No more my Substance on a Project layK
No more a sullen Doubt I will betrayK
Let me but live to Reap do Thou appoint the wayK
