Fragment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGHHIIJJK LMMNNAAOOPPQQRRSSTTSO here confin'd and but to female Clay | A |
ARDELIA's Soul mistook the rightful Way | A |
Whilst the soft Breeze of Pleasure's tempting Air | B |
Made her believe Felicity was there | B |
And basking in the warmth of early Time | C |
To vain Amusements dedicate her Prime | C |
Ambition next allur'd her tow'ring Eye | D |
For Paradice she heard was plac'd on high | D |
Then thought the Court with all its glorious Show | E |
Was sure above the rest and Paradice below | E |
There plac'd too soon the flaming Sword appear'd | F |
Remov'd those Pow'rs whom justly she rever'd | F |
Adher'd too in their Wreck and in their Ruin shar'd | G |
Now by the Wheels inevitable Round | H |
With them thrown prostrate to the humble Ground | H |
No more she takes instructed by that Fall | I |
For fix'd or worth her thought this rolling Ball | I |
Tow'rds a more certain Station she aspires | J |
Unshaken by Revolts and owns no less Desires | J |
But all in vain are Pray'rs extatick Thoughts | K |
Recover'd Moments and retracted Faults | L |
Retirement which the World Moroseness calls | M |
Abandon'd Pleasures in Monastick Walls | M |
These but at distance towards that purpose tend | N |
The lowly Means to an exalted End | N |
Which He must perfect who allots her Stay | A |
And That accomplish'd will direct the way | A |
Pity her restless Cares and weary Strife | O |
And point some Issue to escaping Life | O |
Which so dismiss'd no Pen or Human Speech | P |
Th' ineffable Recess can ever teach | P |
Th' Expanse the Light the Harmony the Throng | Q |
The Bride's Attendance and the Bridal Song | Q |
The numerous Mansions and th' immortal Tree | R |
No Eye unpurg'd by Death must ever see | R |
Or Waves which through that wond'rous City roll | S |
Rest then content my too impatient Soul | S |
Observe but here the easie Precepts given | T |
Then wait with chearful hope till Heaven be known in Heaven | T |
