Enquiry After Peace Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFF DDGGHHHIIJJKKLLGGLLL LLLLLMLNN

PEACE where art thou to be foundA
Where in all the spacious RoundA
May thy Footsteps be pursu'dB
Where may thy calm Seats be view'dB
On some Mountain dost thou lieC
Serenely near the ambient SkyC
Smiling at the Clouds belowD
Where rough Storms and Tempests growD
Or in some retired PlainE
Undisturb'd dost thou remainE
Where no angry Whirlwinds passF
Where no Floods oppress the GrassF
-
High above or deep belowD
Fain I thy Retreat wou'd knowD
Fain I thee alone wou'd findG
Balm to my o'er weary'd MindG
Since what here the World enjoysH
Or our Passions most employsH
Peace opposes or destroysH
Pleasure's a tumultuous thingI
Busy still and still on WingI
Flying swift from place to placeJ
Darting from each beauteous FaceJ
From each strongly mingled BowlK
Through th'inflam'd and restless SoulK
Sov'reign Pow'r who fondly cravesL
But himself to Pomp enslavesL
Stands the Envy of MankindG
Peace in vain attempts to findG
Thirst of Wealth no Quiet knowsL
But near the Death bed fiercer growsL
Wounding Men with secret StingsL
For Evils it on Others bringsL
War who not discreetly shunsL
Thorough Life the Gauntlet runsL
Swords and Pikes and Waves and FlamesL
Each their Stroke against him aimsL
Love if such a thing there beM
Is all Despair or ExtasieL
Poetry's the feav'rish FitN
Th' o'erflowing of unbounded WitN
