Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDDDDDEECC DDFFDGGGHHIIJJ CCKLCGGGAADDMN

At last my old inveterate foeA
No opposition shalt thou knowA
Since I by struggling can obtainB
Nothing but encrease of painB
I will att last no more do soeC
Tho' I confesse I have apply'dD
Sweet mirth and musick and have try'dD
A thousand other arts besideD
To drive thee from my darken'd breastD
Thou who hast banish'd all my restD
But though sometimes a short repreive they gaveE
Unable they and far too weak to saveE
All arts to quell did but augment thy forceC
As rivers check'd break with a wilder courseC
-
Freindship I to my heart have laidD
Freindship th' applauded sov'rain aidD
And thought that charm so strong wou'd proveF
As to compell thee to removeF
And to myself I boasting saidD
Now I a conqu'rer sure shall beG
The end of all my conflicts seeG
And noble tryumph wait on meG
My dusky sullen foe will sureH
N'er this united charge endureH
But leaning on this reed ev'n whilst I spokeI
It peirc'd my hand and into peices brokeI
Still some new object or new int'rest cameJ
And loos'd the bonds and quite disolv'd the claimJ
-
These failing I invok'd a MuseC
And Poetry wou'd often useC
To guard me from thy Tyrant pow'rK
And to oppose thee ev'ry hourL
New troops of fancy's did I chuseC
Alas in vain for all agreeG
To yeild me Captive up to theeG
And heav'n alone can sett me freeG
Thou through my life wilt with me goeA
And make ye passage sad and slowA
All that cou'd ere thy ill gott rule invadeD
Their uselesse arms before thy feet have laidD
The Fort is thine now ruin'd all withinM
Whilst by decays without thy Conquest too is seenN
