Rhyme Scheme: ABCAB DEFGE HIHJI KLKKM NOPNO QRQQR SQSSQ QQQQQ QQQQQ TUTTV WXWYXWhile Monarchs in stern Battle strove | A |
For proud Imperial Sway | B |
Abandon'd to his milder Love | C |
Within a silent peaceful Grove | A |
Alcidor careless lay | B |
- | |
Some term'd it cold unmanly Fear | D |
Some Nicety of Sense | E |
That Drums and Trumpets cou'd not hear | F |
The sullying Blasts of Powder bear | G |
Or with foul Camps dispense | E |
- | |
A patient Martyr to their Scorn | H |
And each ill fashion'd Jest | I |
The Youth who but for Love was born | H |
Remain'd and thought it vast Return | J |
To reign in Cloria's Breast | I |
- | |
But oh a ruffling Soldier came | K |
In all the Pomp of War | L |
The Gazettes long had spoke his Fame | K |
Now Hautboys his Approach proclaim | K |
And draw in Crouds from far | M |
- | |
Cloria unhappily wou'd gaze | N |
And as he nearer drew | O |
The Man of Feather and of Lace | P |
Stopp'd short and with profound Amaze | N |
Took all her Charms to view | O |
- | |
A Bow which from Campaigns he brought | Q |
And to his Holsters low | R |
Herself and the Spectators taught | Q |
That Her the fairest Nymph he thought | Q |
Of all that form'd the Row | R |
- | |
Next day ere Phoebus cou'd be seen | S |
Or any Gate unbarr'd | Q |
At hers upon th' adjoining Green | S |
From Ranks with waving Flags between | S |
Were soften'd Trumpets heard | Q |
- | |
The Noon do's following Treats provide | Q |
In the Pavilion's Shade | Q |
The Neighborhood and all beside | Q |
That will attend the amorous Pride | Q |
Are welcom'd with the Maid | Q |
- | |
Poor Alcidor thy Hopes are cross'd | Q |
Go perish on the Ground | Q |
Thy Sighs by stronger Notes are toss'd | Q |
Drove back or in the Passage lost | Q |
Rich Wines thy Tears have drown'd | Q |
- | |
In Women's Hearts the softest Things | T |
Which Nature cou'd devise | U |
Are yet some harsh and jarring Strings | T |
That when loud Fame or Profit rings | T |
Will answer to the Noise | V |
- | |
Poor Alcidor go Fight or Dye | W |
Let thy fond Notions cease | X |
Man was not made in Shades to lie | W |
Or his full Bliss at ease enjoy | Y |
To Live or Love in peace | X |
