In such a Night when every louder WindA
Is to its distant Cavern safe confin'dA
And only gentle Zephyr fans his WingsB
And lonely Philomel still waking singsB
Or from some Tree fam'd for the Owl's delightC
She hollowing clear directs the Wand'rer rightC
In such a Night when passing Clouds give placeD
Or thinly vail the Heav'ns mysterious FaceD
When in some River overhung with GreenE
The waving Moon and trembling Leaves are seenE
When freshen'd Grass now bears it self uprightC
And makes cool Banks to pleasing Rest inviteC
Whence springs the Woodbind and the Bramble RoseF
And where the sleepy Cowslip shelter'd growsF
Whilst now a paler Hue the Foxglove takesG
Yet checquers still with Red the dusky brakesG
When scattered Glow worms but in Twilight fineH
Shew trivial Beauties watch their Hour to shineH
Whilst Salisb'ry stands the Test of every LightC
In perfect Charms and perfect Virtue brightC
When Odours which declin'd repelling DayI
Thro' temp'rate Air uninterrupted strayI
When darken'd Groves their softest Shadows wearJ
And falling Waters we distinctly hearK
When thro' the Gloom more venerable showsF
Some ancient Fabrick awful in ReposeF
While Sunburnt Hills their swarthy Looks concealL
And swelling Haycocks thicken up the ValeM
When the loos'd Horse now as his Pasture leadsN
Comes slowly grazing thro' th' adjoining MeadsN
Whose stealing Pace and lengthen'd Shade we fearO
Till torn up Forage in his Teeth we hearK
When nibbling Sheep at large pursue their FoodP
And unmolested Kine rechew the CudP
When Curlews cry beneath the Village wallsQ
And to her straggling Brood the Partridge callsQ
Their shortliv'd Jubilee the Creatures keepR
Which but endures whilst Tyrant Man do's sleepR
When a sedate Content the Spirit feelsS
And no fierce Light disturbs whilst it revealsS
But silent Musings urge the Mind to seekT
Something too high for Syllables to speakT
Till the free Soul to a compos'dness charm'dP
Finding the Elements of Rage disarm'dP
O'er all below a solemn Quiet grownU
Joys in th' inferiour World and thinks it like her OwnU
In such a Night let Me abroad remainV
Till Morning breaks and All's confus'd againW
Our Cares our Toils our Clamours are renew'dP
Or Pleasures seldom reach'd again pursu'dP
