A Nocturnal Reverie Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEECCFFGGHHCC IIJKFFLMNNOKPPQQRRSS TTPPUUVWPP| In such a Night when every louder Wind | A |
| Is to its distant Cavern safe confin'd | A |
| And only gentle Zephyr fans his Wings | B |
| And lonely Philomel still waking sings | B |
| Or from some Tree fam'd for the Owl's delight | C |
| She hollowing clear directs the Wand'rer right | C |
| In such a Night when passing Clouds give place | D |
| Or thinly vail the Heav'ns mysterious Face | D |
| When in some River overhung with Green | E |
| The waving Moon and trembling Leaves are seen | E |
| When freshen'd Grass now bears it self upright | C |
| And makes cool Banks to pleasing Rest invite | C |
| Whence springs the Woodbind and the Bramble Rose | F |
| And where the sleepy Cowslip shelter'd grows | F |
| Whilst now a paler Hue the Foxglove takes | G |
| Yet checquers still with Red the dusky brakes | G |
| When scattered Glow worms but in Twilight fine | H |
| Shew trivial Beauties watch their Hour to shine | H |
| Whilst Salisb'ry stands the Test of every Light | C |
| In perfect Charms and perfect Virtue bright | C |
| When Odours which declin'd repelling Day | I |
| Thro' temp'rate Air uninterrupted stray | I |
| When darken'd Groves their softest Shadows wear | J |
| And falling Waters we distinctly hear | K |
| When thro' the Gloom more venerable shows | F |
| Some ancient Fabrick awful in Repose | F |
| While Sunburnt Hills their swarthy Looks conceal | L |
| And swelling Haycocks thicken up the Vale | M |
| When the loos'd Horse now as his Pasture leads | N |
| Comes slowly grazing thro' th' adjoining Meads | N |
| Whose stealing Pace and lengthen'd Shade we fear | O |
| Till torn up Forage in his Teeth we hear | K |
| When nibbling Sheep at large pursue their Food | P |
| And unmolested Kine rechew the Cud | P |
| When Curlews cry beneath the Village walls | Q |
| And to her straggling Brood the Partridge calls | Q |
| Their shortliv'd Jubilee the Creatures keep | R |
| Which but endures whilst Tyrant Man do's sleep | R |
| When a sedate Content the Spirit feels | S |
| And no fierce Light disturbs whilst it reveals | S |
| But silent Musings urge the Mind to seek | T |
| Something too high for Syllables to speak | T |
| Till the free Soul to a compos'dness charm'd | P |
| Finding the Elements of Rage disarm'd | P |
| O'er all below a solemn Quiet grown | U |
| Joys in th' inferiour World and thinks it like her Own | U |
| In such a Night let Me abroad remain | V |
| Till Morning breaks and All's confus'd again | W |
| Our Cares our Toils our Clamours are renew'd | P |
| Or Pleasures seldom reach'd again pursu'd | P |
