Of the wild winter wind | B |
Rushing o'er the mountain heath | C |
Does sadness fill my mind | B |
For long ago I loved to lie | D |
Upon the pathless moor | E |
To hear the wild wind rushing by | D |
With never ceasing roar | F |
- | |
Its sound was music then to me | G |
Its wild and lofty voice | H |
Made by heart beat exultingly | D |
And my whole soul rejoice | H |
- | |
But now how different is the sound | I |
It takes another tone | J |
And howls along the barren ground | I |
With melancholy moan | J |
- | |
Why does the warm light of the sun | K |
No longer cheer my eyes | L |
And why is all the beauty gone | M |
From rosy morning skies | L |
- | |
Beneath this lone and dreary hill | D |
There is a lovely vale | D |
The purling of a crystal rill | D |
The sighing of the gale | D |
- | |
The sweet voice of the singing bird | N |
The wind among the trees | O |
Are ever in that valley heard | N |
While every passing breeze | O |
- | |
Is loaded with the pleasant scent | P |
Of wild and lovely flowers | Q |
To yonder vales I often went | P |
To pass my evening hours | Q |
- | |
Last evening when I wandered there | R |
To soothe my weary heart | S |
Why did the unexpected tear | R |
From my sad eyelid start | S |
- | |
Why did the trees the buds the stream | T |
Sing forth so joylessly | D |
And why did all the valley seem | T |
So sadly changed to me | G |
- | |
I plucked a primrose young and pale | D |
That grew beneath a tree | G |
And then I hastened from the vale | D |
Silent and thoughtfully | G |
- | |
Soon I was near my lofty home | U |
But when I cast my eye | D |
Upon that flower so fair and lone | J |
Why did I heave a sigh | D |
- | |
I thought of taking it again | V |
To the valley where it grew | W |
But soon I spurned that thought as vain | X |
And weak and childish too | W |
- | |
And then I cast that flower away | Y |
To die and wither there | R |
But when I found it dead today | Y |
Why did I shed a tear | R |
- | |
O why are things so changed to me | G |
What gave me joy before | F |
Now fills my heart with misery | G |
And nature smiles no more | F |
- | |
And why are all the beauties gone | M |
From this my native hill | D |
Alas my heart is changed alone | J |
Nature is constant still | D |
- | |
For when the heart is free from care | R |
Whatever meets the eye | D |
Is bright and every sound we hear | Z |
Is full of melody | G |
- | |
The sweetest strain the wildest wind | B |
The murmur of a stream | T |
To the sad and weary mind | B |
Like doleful death knells seem | T |
- | |
Father thou hast long been dead | A2 |
Mother thou art gone | M |
Brother thou art far away | Y |
And I am left alone | J |
- | |
Long before my mother died | B2 |
I was sad and lone | J |
And when she departed too | W |
Every joy was flown | J |
- | |
But the world's before me now | C2 |
Why should I despair | R |
I will not spend my days in vain | X |
I will not linger here | Z |
- | |
There is still a cherished hope | D2 |
To cheer me on my way | Y |
It is burning in my heart | S |
With a feeble ray | Y |
- | |
I will cheer the feeble spark | E2 |
And raise it to a flame | F2 |
And it shall light me through the world | G2 |
And lead me on to fame | F2 |
- | |
I leave thee then my childhood's home | U |
For all thy joys are gone | M |
I leave thee through the world to roam | U |
In search of fair renown | H2 |
- | |
From such a hopeless home to part | S |
Is happiness to me | G |
For nought can charm my weary heart | S |
Except activity | G |
