Why when I hear the stormy breathA
Of the wild winter windB
Rushing o'er the mountain heathC
Does sadness fill my mindB
For long ago I loved to lieD
Upon the pathless moorE
To hear the wild wind rushing byD
With never ceasing roarF
-
Its sound was music then to meG
Its wild and lofty voiceH
Made by heart beat exultinglyD
And my whole soul rejoiceH
-
But now how different is the soundI
It takes another toneJ
And howls along the barren groundI
With melancholy moanJ
-
Why does the warm light of the sunK
No longer cheer my eyesL
And why is all the beauty goneM
From rosy morning skiesL
-
Beneath this lone and dreary hillD
There is a lovely valeD
The purling of a crystal rillD
The sighing of the galeD
-
The sweet voice of the singing birdN
The wind among the treesO
Are ever in that valley heardN
While every passing breezeO
-
Is loaded with the pleasant scentP
Of wild and lovely flowersQ
To yonder vales I often wentP
To pass my evening hoursQ
-
Last evening when I wandered thereR
To soothe my weary heartS
Why did the unexpected tearR
From my sad eyelid startS
-
Why did the trees the buds the streamT
Sing forth so joylesslyD
And why did all the valley seemT
So sadly changed to meG
-
I plucked a primrose young and paleD
That grew beneath a treeG
And then I hastened from the valeD
Silent and thoughtfullyG
-
Soon I was near my lofty homeU
But when I cast my eyeD
Upon that flower so fair and loneJ
Why did I heave a sighD
-
I thought of taking it againV
To the valley where it grewW
But soon I spurned that thought as vainX
And weak and childish tooW
-
And then I cast that flower awayY
To die and wither thereR
But when I found it dead todayY
Why did I shed a tearR
-
O why are things so changed to meG
What gave me joy beforeF
Now fills my heart with miseryG
And nature smiles no moreF
-
And why are all the beauties goneM
From this my native hillD
Alas my heart is changed aloneJ
Nature is constant stillD
-
For when the heart is free from careR
Whatever meets the eyeD
Is bright and every sound we hearZ
Is full of melodyG
-
The sweetest strain the wildest windB
The murmur of a streamT
To the sad and weary mindB
Like doleful death knells seemT
-
Father thou hast long been deadA2
Mother thou art goneM
Brother thou art far awayY
And I am left aloneJ
-
Long before my mother diedB2
I was sad and loneJ
And when she departed tooW
Every joy was flownJ
-
But the world's before me nowC2
Why should I despairR
I will not spend my days in vainX
I will not linger hereZ
-
There is still a cherished hopeD2
To cheer me on my wayY
It is burning in my heartS
With a feeble rayY
-
I will cheer the feeble sparkE2
And raise it to a flameF2
And it shall light me through the worldG2
And lead me on to fameF2
-
I leave thee then my childhood's homeU
For all thy joys are goneM
I leave thee through the world to roamU
In search of fair renownH2
-
From such a hopeless home to partS
Is happiness to meG
For nought can charm my weary heartS
Except activityG
