In all we do and hear and seeA
Is restless Toil and VanityA
While yet the rolling earth abidesB
Men come and go like Ocean tidesB
And ere one generation diesC
Another in its place shall riseC
That sinking soon into the graveD
Others succeed like wave on waveD
-
And as they rise they pass awayE
The sun arises every dayE
And hastening onward to the WestF
He nightly sinks but not to restF
-
Returning to the eastern skiesC
Again to light us he must riseC
And still the restless wind comes forthG
Now blowing keenly from the NorthG
-
Now from the South the East the WestF
For ever changing ne'er at restF
The fountains gushing from the hillsH
Supply the ever running rillsH
-
The thirsty rivers drink their storeI
And bear it rolling to the shoreI
But still the ocean craves for moreI
'Tis endless labour everywhereJ
Sound cannot satisfy the earK
-
Light cannot fill the craving eyeL
Nor riches half our wants supplyL
Pleasure but doubles future painM
And joy brings sorrow in her trainM
-
Laughter is mad and reckless mirthN
What does she in this weary earthN
Should Wealth or Fame our Life employO
Death comes our labour to destroyO
-
To snatch the untasted cup awayE
For which we toiled so many a dayE
What then remains for wretched manP
To use life's comforts while he canP
-
Enjoy the blessings Heaven bestowsH
Assist his friends forgive his foesH
Trust God and keep his statutes stillQ
Upright and firm through good and illQ
-
Thankful for all that God has givenR
Fixing his firmest hopes on heavenR
Knowing that earthly joys decayE
But hoping through the darkest dayE
-
