Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFCCGGFFHH IIIJKLLMMNNOOEEPPHHQ QRREEIn all we do and hear and see | A |
Is restless Toil and Vanity | A |
While yet the rolling earth abides | B |
Men come and go like Ocean tides | B |
And ere one generation dies | C |
Another in its place shall rise | C |
That sinking soon into the grave | D |
Others succeed like wave on wave | D |
And as they rise they pass away | E |
The sun arises every day | E |
And hastening onward to the west | F |
He nightly sinks but not to rest | F |
Returning to the eastern skies | C |
Again to light us he must rise | C |
And still the restless wind comes forth | G |
Now blowing keenly from the north | G |
Now from the South the East the West | F |
For ever changing ne'er at rest | F |
The fountains gushing from the hills | H |
Supply the ever running rills | H |
The thirsty rivers drink their store | I |
And bear it rolling to the shore | I |
But still the ocean craves for more | I |
'Tis endless labour everywhere | J |
Sound cannot satisfy the ear | K |
Sight cannot fill the craving eye | L |
Nor riches happiness supply | L |
Pleasure but doubles future pain | M |
And joy brings sorrow in her train | M |
Laughter is mad and reckless mirth | N |
What does she in this weary earth | N |
Should wealth or fame our life employ | O |
Death comes our labour to destroy | O |
To snatch th' untasted cup away | E |
For which we toiled so many a day | E |
What then remains for wretched man | P |
To use life's comforts while he can | P |
Enjoy the blessings God bestows | H |
Assist his friends forgive his foes | H |
Trust God and keep His statutes still | Q |
Upright and firm through good and ill | Q |
Thankful for all that God has given | R |
Fixing his firmest hopes on heaven | R |
Knowing that earthly joys decay | E |
But hoping through the darkest day | E |
