A
Spirit of earth thy hand is chillB
I've felt its icy claspC
And shuddering I remember stillB
That stony hearted graspC
Thine eye bids love and joy departD
O turn its gaze from meE
It presses down my sinking heartD
I will not walk with theeE
-
-
'Wisdom is mine ' I've heard thee sayF
'Beneath my searching eyeG
All mist and darkness melt awayF
Phantoms and fables flyG
Before me truth can stand aloneH
The naked solid truthI
And man matured my worth will ownH
If I am shunned by youthI
-
-
'Firm is my tread and sure though slowJ
My footsteps never slideK
And he that follows me shall knowJ
I am the surest guide '-
Thy boast is vain but were it trueL
That thou couldst safely steerM
Life's rough and devious pathway throughL
Such guidance I should fearM
-
-
How could I bear to walk for ayeG
With eyes to earthward proneH
O'er trampled weeds and miry clayF
And sand and flinty stoneH
Never the glorious view to greetN
Of hill and dale and skyG
To see that Nature's charms are sweetN
Or feel that Heaven is nighG
-
-
If in my heart arose a springO
A gush of thought divineP
At once stagnation thou wouldst bringO
With that cold touch of thineP
If glancing up I sought to snatchQ
But one glimpse of the skyG
My baffled gaze would only catchQ
Thy heartless cold grey eyeG
-
-
If to the breezes wandering nearM
I listened eagerlyE
And deemed an angel's tongue to hearR
That whispered hope to meE
That heavenly music would be drownedS
In thy harsh droning voiceT
Nor inward thought nor sight nor soundS
Might my sad soul rejoiceT
-
-
Dull is thine ear unheard by theeE
The still small voice of HeavenU
Thine eyes are dim and cannot seeE
The helps that God has givenU
There is a bridge o'er every floodV
Which thou canst not perceiveW
A path through every tangled woodX
But thou will not believeW
-
-
Striving to make thy way by forceY
Toil spent and bramble tornZ
Thou'lt fell the tree that stops thy courseY
And burst through briar and thornZ
And pausing by the river's sideK
Poor reasoner thou wilt deemA2
By casting pebbles in its tideK
To cross the swelling streamA2
-
-
Right through the flinty rock thou'lt tryG
Thy toilsome way to boreB2
Regardless of the pathway nighG
That would conduct thee o'erC2
Not only are thou then unkindD2
And freezing cold to meE
But unbelieving deaf and blindD2
I will not walk with theeE
-
-
Spirit of Pride thy wings are strongE2
Thine eyes like lightning shineP
Ecstatic joys to thee belongE2
And powers almost divineP
But 'tis a false destructive blazeF2
Within those eyes I seeE
Turn hence their fascinating gazeF2
I will not follow theeE
-
-
'Coward and fool ' thou mayst replyG
'Walk on the common sodG2
Go trace with timid foot and eyeG
The steps by others trodG2
'Tis best the beaten path to keepH2
The ancient faith to holdI2
To pasture with thy fellow sheepH2
And lie within the foldI2
-
-
'Cling to the earth poor grovelling wormJ2
'Tis not for thee to soarB2
Against the fury of the stormK2
Amid the thunder's roarB2
There's glory in that daring strifeL2
Unknown undreamt by theeE
There's speechless rapture in the lifeL2
Of those who follow me '-
-
-
Yes I have seen thy votaries oftM2
Upheld by thee their guideK
In strength and courage mount aloftM2
The steepy mountain sideK
I've seen them stand against the skyG
And gazing from belowJ
Beheld thy lightning in their eyeG
Thy triumph on their browN2
-
-
Oh I have felt what glory thenO2
What transport must be theirs'F2
So far above their fellow menO2
Above their toils and caresF2
Inhaling nature's purest breathP2
Her riches round them spreadQ2
The wide expanse of earth beneathR2
Heaven's glories overheadQ2
-
-
But I have seen them downwards dashedS2
Down to a bloody graveT2
And still thy ruthless eye has flashedS2
Thy strong hand did not saveT2
I've seen some o'er the mountain's browN2
Sustained a while by theeE
O'er rocks of ice and hills of snowJ
Bound fearless wild and freeE
-
-
Bold and exultant was their mienU2
While thou didst cheer them onV2
But evening fell and then I weenV2
Their faithless guide was goneV2
Alas how fared thy favourites thenV2
Lone helpless weary coldI2
Did ever wanderer find againV2
The path he left of oldI2
-
-
Where is their glory where the prideK
That swelled their hearts beforeB2
Where now the courage that defiedK
The mightiest tempest's roarB2
What shall they do when night grows blackW2
When angry storms ariseF2
Who now will lead them to the trackW2
Thou taught'st them to despiseF2
-
-
Spirit of Pride it needs not thisF2
To make me shun thy wilesF2
Renounce thy triumph and thy blissF2
Thy honours and thy smilesF2
Bright as thou art and bold and strongE2
That fierce glance wins not meE
And I abhor thy scoffing tongueX2
I will not walk with theeE
-
-
Spirit of Faith be thou my guideK
O clasp my hand in thineV2
And let me never quit thy sideK
Thy comforts are divineV2
Earth calls thee 'blind misguided one'V2
But who can show like theeE
Past things that have been seen and doneV2
And things that are to beE
-
-
Secrets concealed from Nature's kenV2
Who like thee can declareY2
Or who like thee to erring menV2
God's holy will can bearY2
Pride scorns thee for thy lowly mienV2
But who like thee can riseF2
Above this restless clouded sceneV2
Beyond the holy skiesF2
-
-
Meek is thine eye and soft thy voiceF2
But wondrous is thy mightZ2
To make the wretched soul rejoiceF2
To give the simple lightZ2
And still to all that seek thy wayF
Such magic power is givenV2
E'en while their footsteps press the clayF
Their souls ascend to heavenV2
-
-
Danger surrounds them pain and woeJ
Their portion here must beE
But only they that trust thee knowJ
What comfort dwells with theeE
Strength to sustain their drooping powersF2
And vigour to defendA3
Thou pole star of my darkest hoursF2
Affliction's firmest friendA3
-
-
Day does not always mark our wayF
Night's terrors oft appalF
But lead me and I cannot strayF
Hold me I shall not fallF
Sustain me I shall never faintB3
How rough soe'er may beE
My upward road nor moan nor plaintB3
Shall mar my trust in theeE
-
-
Narrow the path by which we goJ
And oft it turns asideB3
From pleasant meads where roses blowJ
And murmuring waters glideB3
Where flowery turf lies green and softB3
And gentle gales are sweetB3
To where dark mountains frown aloftB3
Hard rocks distress the feetB3
-
-
Deserts beyond lie bleak and barC3
