I have slept upon my couchA
But my spirit did not restB
For the labours of the dayC
Yet my weary soul opprestC
And before my dreaming eyesD
Still the learned volumes layC
And I could not close their leavesE
And I could not turn awayC
-
But I oped my eyes at lastC
And I heard a muffled soundC
'Twas the night breeze come to sayC
That the snow was on the groundC
-
Then I knew that there was restC
On the mountain's bosom freeF
So I left my fevered couchA
And I flew to waken theeF
-
I have flown to waken theeF
For if thou wilt not ariseD
Then my soul can drink no peaceG
From these holy moonlight skiesD
-
And this waste of virgin snowH
To my sight will not be fairI
Unless thou wilt smiling comeJ
Love to wander with me thereI
-
Then awake Maria wakeK
For if thou couldst only knowH
How the quiet moonlight sleepsL
On this wilderness of snowH
-
And the groves of ancient treesM
In their snowy garb arrayedC
Till they stretch into the gloomN
Of the distant valley's shadeC
-
I know thou wouldst rejoiceO
To inhale this bracing airI
Thou wouldst break thy sweetest sleepP
To behold a scene so fairI
-
O'er these wintry wilds aloneQ
Thou wouldst joy to wander freeF
And it will not please thee lessR
Though that bliss be shared with meF
