The Captive's Dream Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHCIJKHBLMNOPC QRBBSTB UMethought I saw him but I knew him not | A |
He was so changed from what he used to be | B |
There was no redness on his woe worn cheek | C |
No sunny smile upon his ashy lips | D |
His hollow wandering eyes looked wild and fierce | E |
And grief was printed on his marble brow | F |
And O I thought he clasped his wasted hands | G |
And raised his haggard eyes to Heaven and prayed | H |
That he might die I had no power to speak | C |
I thought I was allowed to see him thus | I |
And yet I might not speak one single word | J |
I might not even tell him that I lived | K |
And that it might be possible if search were made | H |
To find out where I was and set me free | B |
O how I longed to clasp him to my heart | L |
Or but to hold his trembling hand in mine | M |
And speak one word of comfort to his mind | N |
I struggled wildly but it was in vain | O |
I could not rise from my dark dungeon floor | P |
And the dear name I vainly strove to speak | C |
Died in a voiceless whisper on my tongue | Q |
Then I awoke and lo it was a dream | R |
A dream Alas it was reality | B |
For well I know wherever he may be | B |
He mourns me thus O heaven I could bear | S |
My deadly fate with calmness if there were | T |
No kindred hearts to bleed and break for me | B |
