The Captive Dove Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEF AGAG HIHF CJCJ KBKB

Poor restless dove I pity theeA
And when I hear thy plaintive moanB
I mourn for thy captivityA
And in thy woes forget mine ownB
To see thee stand prepared to flyC
And flap those useless wings of thineD
And gaze into the distant skyC
Would melt a harder heart than mineD
-
In vain in vain Thou canst not riseE
Thy prison roof confines thee thereF
Its slender wires delude thine eyesE
And quench thy longings with despairF
-
Oh thou wert made to wander freeA
In sunny mead and shady groveG
And far beyond the rolling seaA
In distant climes at will to roveG
-
Yet hadst thou but one gentle mateH
Thy little drooping heart to cheerI
And share with thee thy captive stateH
Thou couldst be happy even thereF
-
Yes even there if listening byC
One faithful dear companion stoodJ
While gazing on her full bright eyeC
Thou mightst forget thy native woodJ
-
But thou poor solitary doveK
Must make unheard thy joyless moanB
The heart that Nature formed to loveK
Must pine neglected and aloneB
