Past Days Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDDEFGFHH IJIJKK LMLMNN IOIOPP Q'Tis strange to think there was a time | A |
When mirth was not an empty name | B |
When laughter really cheered the heart | C |
And frequent smiles unbidden came | B |
And tears of grief would only flow | D |
In sympathy for others' woe | D |
When speech expressed the inward thought | E |
And heart to kindred heart was bare | F |
And Summer days were far too short | G |
For all the pleasures crowded there | F |
And silence solitude and rest | H |
Now welcome to the weary breast | H |
- | |
Were all unprized uncourted then | I |
And all the joy one spirit showed | J |
The other deeply felt again | I |
And friendship like a river flowed | J |
Constant and strong its silent course | K |
For nought withstood its gentle force | K |
- | |
When night the holy time of peace | L |
Was dreaded as the parting hour | M |
When speech and mirth at once must cease | L |
And Silence must resume her power | M |
Though ever free from pains and woes | N |
She only brought us calm repose | N |
- | |
And when the blessed dawn again | I |
Brought daylight to the blushing skies | O |
We woke and not reluctant then | I |
To joyless labour did we rise | O |
But full of hope and glad and gay | P |
We welcomed the returning day | P |
