Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDEDEFF CGCGHH AIJIKK LMLMNN JOJOPP MQMQJJ MMusic I love but never strain | A |
Could kindle raptures so divine | B |
So grief assuage so conquer pain | A |
And rouse this pensive heart of mine | B |
As that we hear on Christmas morn | C |
Upon the wintry breezes borne | C |
Though Darkness still her empire keep | D |
And hours must pass ere morning break | E |
From troubled dreams or slumbers deep | D |
That music kindly bids us wake | E |
It calls us with an angel's voice | F |
To wake and worship and rejoice | F |
- | |
To greet with joy the glorious morn | C |
Which angels welcomed long ago | G |
When our redeeming Lord was born | C |
To bring the light of Heaven below | G |
The Powers of Darkness to dispel | H |
And rescue Earth from Death and Hell | H |
- | |
While listening to that sacred strain | A |
My raptured spirit soars on high | I |
I seem to hear those songs again | J |
Resounding through the open sky | I |
That kindled such divine delight | K |
In those who watched their flocks by night | K |
- | |
With them I celebrate His birth | L |
Glory to God in highest Heaven | M |
Good will to men and peace on Earth | L |
To us a Saviour king is given | M |
Our God is come to claim His own | N |
And Satan's power is overthrown | N |
- | |
A sinless God for sinful men | J |
Descends to suffer and to bleed | O |
Hell must renounce its empire then | J |
The price is paid the world is freed | O |
And Satan's self must now confess | P |
That Christ has earned a Right to bless | P |
- | |
Now holy Peace may smile from heaven | M |
And heavenly Truth from earth shall spring | Q |
The captive's galling bonds are riven | M |
For our Redeemer is our king | Q |
And He that gave his blood for men | J |
Will lead us home to God again | J |
