Music I love but never strainA
Could kindle raptures so divineB
So grief assuage so conquer painA
And rouse this pensive heart of mineB
As that we hear on Christmas mornC
Upon the wintry breezes borneC
Though Darkness still her empire keepD
And hours must pass ere morning breakE
From troubled dreams or slumbers deepD
That music kindly bids us wakeE
It calls us with an angel's voiceF
To wake and worship and rejoiceF
-
To greet with joy the glorious mornC
Which angels welcomed long agoG
When our redeeming Lord was bornC
To bring the light of Heaven belowG
The Powers of Darkness to dispelH
And rescue Earth from Death and HellH
-
While listening to that sacred strainA
My raptured spirit soars on highI
I seem to hear those songs againJ
Resounding through the open skyI
That kindled such divine delightK
In those who watched their flocks by nightK
-
With them I celebrate His birthL
Glory to God in highest HeavenM
Good will to men and peace on EarthL
To us a Saviour king is givenM
Our God is come to claim His ownN
And Satan's power is overthrownN
-
A sinless God for sinful menJ
Descends to suffer and to bleedO
Hell must renounce its empire thenJ
The price is paid the world is freedO
And Satan's self must now confessP
That Christ has earned a Right to blessP
-
Now holy Peace may smile from heavenM
And heavenly Truth from earth shall springQ
The captive's galling bonds are rivenM
For our Redeemer is our kingQ
And He that gave his blood for menJ
Will lead us home to God againJ
