What though the sun had left my skyA
To save me from despairB
The blessed moon arose on highA
And shone serenely thereB
I watched her with a tearful gazeC
Rise slowly o'er the hillD
While through the dim horizon's hazeC
Her light gleamed faint and chillD
-
I thought such wan and lifeless beamsE
Could ne'er my heart repayF
For the bright sun's most transient gleamsE
That cheered me through the dayF
-
But as above that mist's controlG
She rose and brighter shoneH
I felt her light upon my soulG
But now that light is goneI
-
Thick vapours snatched her from my sightJ
And I was darkling leftK
All in the cold and gloomy nightJ
Of light and hope bereftK
-
Until methought a little starL
Shone forth with trembling rayF
To cheer me with its light afarL
But that too passed awayF
-
Anon an earthly meteor blazedM
The gloomy darkness throughN
I smiled yet trembled while I gazedM
But that soon vanished tooN
-
And darker drearier fell the nightJ
Upon my spirit thenO
But what is that faint struggling lightJ
Is it the Moon againO
-
Kind Heaven increase that silvery gleamP
And bid these clouds departQ
And let her soft celestial beamP
Restore my fainting heartQ
