Despondency Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIH JKLK MNON PQRQ STUT VCWC TXIX

I have gone backward in the workA
The labour has not spedB
Drowsy and dark my spirit liesC
Heavy and dull as leadB
How can I rouse my sinking soulD
From such a lethargyE
How can I break these iron chainsF
And set my spirit freeE
-
There have been times when I have mournedG
In anguish o'er the pastH
And raised my suppliant hands on highI
While tears fell thick and fastH
-
And prayed to have my sins forgivenJ
With such a fervent zealK
An earnest grief a strong desireL
That now I cannot feelK
-
And vowed to trample on my sinsM
And called on Heaven to aidN
My spirit in her firm resolvesO
And hear the vows I madeN
-
And I have felt so full of loveP
So strong in spirit thenQ
As if my heart would never coolR
Or wander back againQ
-
And yet alas how many timesS
My feet have gone astrayT
How oft have I forgot my GodU
How greatly fallen awayT
-
My sins increase my love grows coldV
And Hope within me diesC
And Faith itself is wavering nowW
O how shall I ariseC
-
I cannot weep but I can prayT
Then let me not despairX
Lord Jesus save me lest I dieI
And hear a wretch's prayerX
