Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEE FFGH IIHH JJII KKLL HHMM NNHH OOPP QQHH RRSS HHTT UUDDVW XI'm buried now I've done with life | A |
I've done with hate revenge and strife | A |
I've done with joy and hope and love | B |
And all the bustling world above | B |
Long have I dwelt forgotten here | C |
In pining woe and dull despair | D |
This place of solitude and gloom | E |
Must be my dungeon and my tomb | E |
- | |
No hope no pleasure can I find | F |
I am grown weary of my mind | F |
Often in balmy sleep I try | G |
To gain a rest from misery | H |
- | |
And in one hour of calm repose | I |
To find a respite from my woes | I |
But dreamless sleep is not for me | H |
And I am still in misery | H |
- | |
I dream of liberty 'tis true | J |
But then I dream of sorrow too | J |
Of blood and guilt and horrid woes | I |
Of tortured friends and happy foes | I |
- | |
I dream about the world but then | K |
I dream of fiends instead of men | K |
Each smiling hope so quickly fades | L |
And such a lurid gloom pervades | L |
- | |
That world that when I wake and see | H |
Those dreary phantoms fade and flee | H |
Even in my dungeon I can smile | M |
And taste of joy a little while | M |
- | |
And yet it is not always so | N |
I dreamt a little while ago | N |
That all was as it used to be | H |
A fresh free wind passed over me | H |
- | |
It was a pleasant summer's day | O |
The sun shone forth with cheering ray | O |
Methought a little lovely child | P |
Looked up into my face and smiled | P |
- | |
My heart was full I wept for joy | Q |
It was my own my darling boy | Q |
I clasped him to my breast and he | H |
Kissed me and laughed in childish glee | H |
- | |
Just them I heard in whisper sweet | R |
A well known voice my name repeat | R |
His father stood before my eyes | S |
I gazed at him in mute surprise | S |
- | |
I thought he smiled and spoke to me | H |
But still in silent ecstasy | H |
I gazed at him I could not speak | T |
I uttered one long piercing shriek | T |
- | |
Alas Alas That cursed scream | U |
Aroused me from my heavenly dream | U |
I looked around in wild despair | D |
I called them but they were not there | D |
The father and the child are gone | V |
And I must live and die alone | W |
