Sunlight of the heavenly dayA
Mighty to revive and cheerB
Bless our yet untrodden wayA
Lead us through the entered yearB
Where the shades of death we seeC
Let Thy living brightness beC
Let it speed our lingering feetD
Let it shine on all we meetD
While before our chastened gazeE
Earthly pleasures fade and failF
Thou the light of all our daysE
Thou our steadfast glory hailF
-
Forward though the path be hidG
Though we pass the lurking foeH
Though the sound of war forbidG
Girt with gladness let its goH
Bold in Thy protecting careI
Strong to prove Thee faithful thereI
Through the desert or the seaC
On to reign in life with TheeC
Ah with more than fearless heartJ
Homeward be our faces setK
Show us in our present partJ
Wealth we have not measured yetK
-
Open Thou beneath our treadL
Springs the distance could not showH
From the holy Fountain headL
Let them rise where'er we goH
Rather give us eyes to seeC
Love awake to love in TheeC
Hearts that trusting in Thy careI
Find its traces everywhereI
Teach us as we pass alongM
In the shining of Thy faceN
Many a sweet thanksgiving songM
Even in a dreary placeN
-
While with firm unyielding willO
For the victor's crown we striveP
Gracious Savior keep us stillO
To Thy gentlest signs aliveP
Where the stormy wind is heardQ
Quick to every tender wordQ
And for all our journey's lengthR
Armed with meekness more than strengthR
In the shadow of Thy handS
We can brave the uprooting galeF
And a little child may standS
Where the soldier's heart would failF
-
Oft a desolating blastT
Bears the seed of comfort tooU
And the patient soul at lastT
Finds a garden where it blewU
So where nothing cheers our sightV
Germs of love may spring to lightV
Bright 'mid earth's oppressive shadesW
Fresh beside the leaf that fadesW
Let the precious seed aboundX
Make the tempest strong to blessY
Strong to claim our thorny groundX
For the fruits of holinessZ
-
Lord of All we cannot knowH
What our paths may yet unfoldA2
But the part that love would showH
Wise to save us Thou hast toldA2
By our heart's unmeasured priceB2
By Thy life long sacrificeB2
By Thy death to set us freeC
Lead us on to joy in TheeC
On to greet the perfect dayA
Blessed End of time and strifeC2
On throngh all the shinlng wayA
Brightness of our human lifeC2
