YOUNG Jem at noon return'd from schoolA
As hungry as could beB
He cried to Sue the servant maidC
'My dinner give to me 'D
-
Said Sue 'It is not yet come homeE
Besides it is not late '-
'No matter that ' cries little JemF
'I do not like to wait '-
-
Quick to the baker's Jemmy wentG
And ask'd 'Is dinner done '-
'It is ' replied the baker's manH
'Then home with it I'll run '-
-
'Nay Sir ' replied he prudentlyB
'I tell you 'tis too hotI
And much too heavy 'tis for you '-
'I tell you it is not '-
-
'Papa mamma are both gone outJ
And I for dinner longK
So give it me it is all mineL
And baker hold your tongueM
-
'A shoulder 'tis of mutton niceN
And batter pudding tooO
I'm glad of that it is so goodP
How clever is our Sue '-
-
Now near the door young Jem was comeQ
He round the corner turn'dR
But oh sad fate unlucky chanceS
The dish his fingers burn'dR
-
Now in the kennel down fell dishT
And down fell all the meatU
Swift went the pudding in the streamV
And sail'd along the streetU
-
The people laugh'd and rude boys grinn'dW
At mutton's hapless fallX
But though ashamed young Jemmy criedY
'Better lose part than all '-
-
The shoulder by the knuckle seizedZ
His hands both grasp'd it fastA2
And deaf to all their gibes and criesB2
He gain'd his home at lastA2
-
'Impatience is a fault ' cries JemF
'The baker told me trueO
In future I will patient beB
And mind what says our Sue '-
