Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GHHG IJJI KLLK MNOM PLLPDear Bessie would my tired rhyme | A |
Had force to rise from apathy | B |
And shaking off its lethargy | B |
Ring word tones like a Christmas chime | A |
- | |
But in my soul's high belfry chill | C |
The bitter wind of doubt has blown | D |
The summer swallows all have flown | D |
The bells are frost bound mute and still | C |
- | |
Upon the crumbling boards the snow | E |
Has drifted deep the clappers hang | F |
Prismed with icicles their clang | F |
Unheard since ages long ago | E |
- | |
The rope I pull is stiff and cold | G |
My straining ears detect no sound | H |
Except a sigh as round and round | H |
The wind rocks through the timbers old | G |
- | |
Below I know the church is bright | I |
With haloed tapers warm with prayer | J |
But here I only feel the air | J |
Of icy centuries of night | I |
- | |
Beneath my feet the snow is lit | K |
And gemmed with colours red and blue | L |
Topaz and green where light falls through | L |
The saints that in the windows sit | K |
- | |
Here darkness seems a spectred thing | M |
Voiceless and haunting while the stars | N |
Mock with a light of long dead years | O |
The ache of present suffering | M |
- | |
Silent and winter killed I stand | P |
No carol hymns my debt to you | L |
But take this frozen thought in lieu | L |
And thaw its music in your hand | P |
