To Elizabeth Ward Perkins Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GHHG IJJI KLLK MNOM PLLP

Dear Bessie would my tired rhymeA
Had force to rise from apathyB
And shaking off its lethargyB
Ring word tones like a Christmas chimeA
-
But in my soul's high belfry chillC
The bitter wind of doubt has blownD
The summer swallows all have flownD
The bells are frost bound mute and stillC
-
Upon the crumbling boards the snowE
Has drifted deep the clappers hangF
Prismed with icicles their clangF
Unheard since ages long agoE
-
The rope I pull is stiff and coldG
My straining ears detect no soundH
Except a sigh as round and roundH
The wind rocks through the timbers oldG
-
Below I know the church is brightI
With haloed tapers warm with prayerJ
But here I only feel the airJ
Of icy centuries of nightI
-
Beneath my feet the snow is litK
And gemmed with colours red and blueL
Topaz and green where light falls throughL
The saints that in the windows sitK
-
Here darkness seems a spectred thingM
Voiceless and haunting while the starsN
Mock with a light of long dead yearsO
The ache of present sufferingM
-
Silent and winter killed I standP
No carol hymns my debt to youL
But take this frozen thought in lieuL
And thaw its music in your handP
