The tall yellow hollyhocks standA
Still and straightB
With their round blossoms spread openC
In the quiet sunshineD
And still is the old Roman wallE
Rough with jagged bits of flintF
And jutting stonesG
Old and craggedF
Quite still in its antiquityF
The pear trees press their branches against itF
And feeling it warm and kindlyF
The little pears ripen to yellow and redF
They hang heavy bursting with juiceH
Against the wallE
So old so stillI
-
The sky is stillI
The clouds make no soundF
As they slide awayJ
Beyond the Cathedral TowerK
To the riverK
And the seaF
It is very quietF
Very sunnyF
The myrtle flowers stretch themselves in the sunshineD
But make no soundF
The roses push their little tendrils upL
And climb higher and higherK
In spots they have climbed over the wallE
But they are very stillI
They do not seem to moveM
And the old wall carries themN
Without effort and quietlyF
Ripens and shields the vines and blossomsO
-
A bird in a plane treeF
Sings a few notesP
Cadenced and perfectF
They weave into the silenceQ
The Cathedral bell knocksR
One two three and againS
And then againS
It is a quiet soundF
Calling to prayerT
Hardly scattering the stillnessU
Only making it close in more denselyF
The gardener picks ripe gooseberriesV
For the Dean's supper to nightF
It is very quietF
Very regulated and mellowW
But the wall is oldF
It has known many daysX
It is a Roman wallE
Left over and forgottenC
-
Beyond the Cathedral CloseY
Yelp and mutter the discontents of people not mellowW
Not well regulatedF
People who care more for bread than for beautyF
Who would break the tombs of saintsZ
And give the painted windows of churchesA2
To their children for toysB2
People who sayJ
'They are dead we liveC2
The world is for the living '-
-
Fools It is always the dead who breedF
Crush the ripe fruit and cast it asideF
Yet its seeds shall fructifyC2
And trees rise where your huts were standingD2
But the little people are ignorantF
They chaffer and swarmE2
They gnaw like ratsF2
And the foundations of the Cathedral are honeycombedF
-
The Dean is in the Chapter HouseG2
He is reading the architect's billI
For the completed restoration of the CathedralH2
He will have ripe gooseberries for supperK
And then he will walk up and down the pathI2
By the wallE
And admire the snapdragons and dahliasG2
Thinking how quiet and peacefulH2
The garden isG2
The old wall will watch himJ2
Very quietly and patiently it will watchK2
For the wall is oldF
It is a Roman wallE
