Still and straight | B |
With their round blossoms spread open | C |
In the quiet sunshine | D |
And still is the old Roman wall | E |
Rough with jagged bits of flint | F |
And jutting stones | G |
Old and cragged | F |
Quite still in its antiquity | F |
The pear trees press their branches against it | F |
And feeling it warm and kindly | F |
The little pears ripen to yellow and red | F |
They hang heavy bursting with juice | H |
Against the wall | E |
So old so still | I |
- | |
The sky is still | I |
The clouds make no sound | F |
As they slide away | J |
Beyond the Cathedral Tower | K |
To the river | K |
And the sea | F |
It is very quiet | F |
Very sunny | F |
The myrtle flowers stretch themselves in the sunshine | D |
But make no sound | F |
The roses push their little tendrils up | L |
And climb higher and higher | K |
In spots they have climbed over the wall | E |
But they are very still | I |
They do not seem to move | M |
And the old wall carries them | N |
Without effort and quietly | F |
Ripens and shields the vines and blossoms | O |
- | |
A bird in a plane tree | F |
Sings a few notes | P |
Cadenced and perfect | F |
They weave into the silence | Q |
The Cathedral bell knocks | R |
One two three and again | S |
And then again | S |
It is a quiet sound | F |
Calling to prayer | T |
Hardly scattering the stillness | U |
Only making it close in more densely | F |
The gardener picks ripe gooseberries | V |
For the Dean's supper to night | F |
It is very quiet | F |
Very regulated and mellow | W |
But the wall is old | F |
It has known many days | X |
It is a Roman wall | E |
Left over and forgotten | C |
- | |
Beyond the Cathedral Close | Y |
Yelp and mutter the discontents of people not mellow | W |
Not well regulated | F |
People who care more for bread than for beauty | F |
Who would break the tombs of saints | Z |
And give the painted windows of churches | A2 |
To their children for toys | B2 |
People who say | J |
'They are dead we live | C2 |
The world is for the living ' | - |
- | |
Fools It is always the dead who breed | F |
Crush the ripe fruit and cast it aside | F |
Yet its seeds shall fructify | C2 |
And trees rise where your huts were standing | D2 |
But the little people are ignorant | F |
They chaffer and swarm | E2 |
They gnaw like rats | F2 |
And the foundations of the Cathedral are honeycombed | F |
- | |
The Dean is in the Chapter House | G2 |
He is reading the architect's bill | I |
For the completed restoration of the Cathedral | H2 |
He will have ripe gooseberries for supper | K |
And then he will walk up and down the path | I2 |
By the wall | E |
And admire the snapdragons and dahlias | G2 |
Thinking how quiet and peaceful | H2 |
The garden is | G2 |
The old wall will watch him | J2 |
Very quietly and patiently it will watch | K2 |
For the wall is old | F |
It is a Roman wall | E |
