Rhyme Scheme: ABBBA CDDDE FGHGF IJJJI KLLLL LJJJL LMMML LNONL PQRQPHow long shall I tarnish the mirror of life | A |
A spatter of rust on its polished steel | B |

Like a goaded wheel | B |

- | |
The night is sliding towards the dawn | C |
And upturned hills crouch at autumn's knees | D |
A torn moon flees | D |
Through the hemlock trees | D |
The hours have gnawed it to feed their spawn | E |
- | |
Pursuing and jeering the misshapen thing | F |
A rabble of clouds flares out of the east | G |
Like dogs unleashed | H |
After a beast | G |
They stream on the sky an outflung string | F |
- | |
A desolate wind through the unpeopled dark | I |
Shakes the bushes and whistles through empty nests | J |
And the fierce unrests | J |
I keep as guests | J |
Crowd my brain with corpses pallid and stark | I |
- | |
Leave me in peace O Spectres who haunt | K |
My labouring mind I have fought and failed | L |
I have not quailed | L |
I was all unmailed | L |
And naked I strove 'tis my only vaunt | L |
- | |
The moon drops into the silver day | L |
As waking out of her swoon she comes | J |
I hear the drums | J |
Of millenniums | J |
Beating the mornings I still must stay | L |
- | |
The years I must watch go in and out | L |
While I build with water and dig in air | M |
And the trumpets blare | M |
Hollow despair | M |
The shuddering trumpets of utter rout | L |
- | |
An atom tossed in a chaos made | L |
Of yeasting worlds which bubble and foam | N |
Whence have I come | O |
What would be home | N |
I hear no answer I am afraid | L |
- | |
I crave to be lost like a wind blown flame | P |
Pushed into nothingness by a breath | Q |
And quench in a wreath | R |
Of engulfing death | Q |
This fight for a God or this devil's game | P |
