How long shall I tarnish the mirror of lifeA
A spatter of rust on its polished steelB
The seasons reelB
Like a goaded wheelB
Half numb half maddened my days are strifeA
-
The night is sliding towards the dawnC
And upturned hills crouch at autumn's kneesD
A torn moon fleesD
Through the hemlock treesD
The hours have gnawed it to feed their spawnE
-
Pursuing and jeering the misshapen thingF
A rabble of clouds flares out of the eastG
Like dogs unleashedH
After a beastG
They stream on the sky an outflung stringF
-
A desolate wind through the unpeopled darkI
Shakes the bushes and whistles through empty nestsJ
And the fierce unrestsJ
I keep as guestsJ
Crowd my brain with corpses pallid and starkI
-
Leave me in peace O Spectres who hauntK
My labouring mind I have fought and failedL
I have not quailedL
I was all unmailedL
And naked I strove 'tis my only vauntL
-
The moon drops into the silver dayL
As waking out of her swoon she comesJ
I hear the drumsJ
Of millenniumsJ
Beating the mornings I still must stayL
-
The years I must watch go in and outL
While I build with water and dig in airM
And the trumpets blareM
Hollow despairM
The shuddering trumpets of utter routL
-
An atom tossed in a chaos madeL
Of yeasting worlds which bubble and foamN
Whence have I comeO
What would be homeN
I hear no answer I am afraidL
-
I crave to be lost like a wind blown flameP
Pushed into nothingness by a breathQ
And quench in a wreathR
Of engulfing deathQ
This fight for a God or this devil's gameP
