The Coal Picker Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGDDDCCD DCCCCHHIIDDJJCCKKLCC CMMNNEE

He perches in the slime inertA
Bedaubed with iridescent dirtA
The oil upon the puddles driesB
To colours like a peacock's eyesB
And half submerged tomato cansC
Shine scaly as leviathansC
Oozily crawling through the mudD
The ground is here and there bestudD
With lumps of only part burned coalE
His duty is to glean the wholeE
To pick them from the filth each oneF
To hoard them for the hidden sunF
Which glows within each fiery coreG
And waits to be made free once moreG
Their sharp and glistening edges cutD
His stiffened fingers Through the smutD
Gleam red the wounds which will not shutD
Wet through and shivering he kneelsC
And digs the slippery coals like eelsC
They slide about His force all spentD
He counts his small accomplishmentD
A half a dozen clinker coalsC
Which still have fire in their soulsC
Fire And in his thought there burnsC
The topaz fire of votive urnsC
He sees it fling from hill to hillH
And still consumed is burning stillH
Higher and higher leaps the flameI
The smoke an ever shifting frameI
He sees a Spanish Castle oldD
With silver steps and paths of goldD
From myrtle bowers comes the plashJ
Of fountains and the emerald flashJ
Of parrots in the orange treesC
Whose blossoms pasture humming beesC
He knows he feeds the urns whose smokeK
Bears visions that his master strokeK
Is out of dirt and miseryL
To light the fire of poesyC
He sees the glory yet he knowsC
That others cannot see his showsC
To them his smoke is sightless blackM
His votive vessels but a packM
Of old discarded shards his fireN
A peddler's still to him the pyreN
Is incensed an enduring goalE
He sighs and grubs another coalE
