Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEF GHIJKLFMD NOFPI QRBAMSTOF

Wild little bird who chose thee for a signA
To put upon the cover of this bookB
Who heard thee singing in the distance dimC
The vague far greenness of the enshrouding woodD
When the damp freshness of the morning earthE
Was full of pungent sweetness and thy songF
-
Who followed over moss and twisted rootsG
And pushed through the wet leaves of trailing vinesH
Where slanting sunbeams gleamed uncertainlyI
While ever clearer came the dropping notesJ
Until at last two widening trunks disclosedK
Thee singing on a spray of branching beechL
Hidden then seen and always that same songF
Of joyful sweetness rapture incarnateM
Filled the hushed rustling stillness of the woodD
-
We do not know what bird thou art PerhapsN
That fairy bird fabled in island taleO
Who never sings but once and then his songF
Is of such fearful beauty that he diesP
From sheer exuberance of melodyI
-
For this they took thee little bird for thisQ
They captured thee tilting among the leavesR
And stamped thee for a symbol on this bookB
For it contains a song surpassing thineA
Richer more sweet more poignant And the poetM
Who felt this burning beauty and whose heartS
Was full of loveliest things sang all he knewT
A little while and then he died too frailO
To bear this untamed passionate burst of songF
