September, 1918 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBCDEFGHIJKBLGMNO

This afternoon was the colour of water falling through sunlightA
The trees glittered with the tumbling of leavesB
The sidewalks shone like alleys of dropped maple leavesB
And the houses ran along them laughing out of square open windowsC
Under a tree in the parkD
Two little boys lying flat on their facesE
Were carefully gathering red berriesF
To put in a pasteboard boxG
Some day there will be no warH
Then I shall take out this afternoonI
And turn it in my fingersJ
And remark the sweet taste of it upon my palateK
And note the crisp variety of its flights of leavesB
To day I can only gather itL
And put it into my lunch boxG
For I have time for nothingM
But the endeavour to balance myselfN
Upon a broken worldO
