September, 1918 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBCDEFGHIJKBLGMNO| This afternoon was the colour of water falling through sunlight | A |
| The trees glittered with the tumbling of leaves | B |
| The sidewalks shone like alleys of dropped maple leaves | B |
| And the houses ran along them laughing out of square open windows | C |
| Under a tree in the park | D |
| Two little boys lying flat on their faces | E |
| Were carefully gathering red berries | F |
| To put in a pasteboard box | G |
| Some day there will be no war | H |
| Then I shall take out this afternoon | I |
| And turn it in my fingers | J |
| And remark the sweet taste of it upon my palate | K |
| And note the crisp variety of its flights of leaves | B |
| To day I can only gather it | L |
| And put it into my lunch box | G |
| For I have time for nothing | M |
| But the endeavour to balance myself | N |
| Upon a broken world | O |
