As I sit here in the quiet Summer nightA
Suddenly from the distant road there comesB
The grind and rush of an electric carC
And from still farther offD
An engine puffs sharplyE
Followed by the drawn out shunting scrape of a freight trainF
These are the sounds that men makeG
In the long business of livingH
They will always make such soundsI
Years after I am dead and cannot hear themJ
-
-
Sitting here in the Summer nightA
I think of my deathK
What will it be like for you thenL
You will see my chairM
With its bright chintz coveringH
Standing in the afternoon sunshineN
As nowO
You will see my narrow tableP
At which I have written so many hoursQ
My dogs will push their noses into your handR
And ask askS
Clinging to you with puzzled eyesT
-
-
The old house will still be hereU
The old house which has known me since the beginningH
The walls which have watched me while I playedV
Soldiers marbles paper dollsW
Which have protected me and my booksX
The front door will gaze down among the old treesY
Where as a child I hunted ghosts and IndiansZ
It will look out on the wide gravel sweepA2
Where I rolled my hoopB2
And at the rhododendron bushesC2
Where I caught black spotted butterfliesT
-
-
The old house will guard youD2
As I have doneE2
Its walls and rooms will hold youD2
And I shall whisper my thoughts and fanciesY
As alwaysF2
From the pages of my booksX
-
-
You will sit here some quiet Summer nightA
Listening to the puffing trainsG2
But you will not be lonelyE
For these things are a part of meE
And my love will go on speaking to youD2
Through the chairs and the tables and the picturesQ
As it does now through my voiceH2
And the quick necessary touch of my handR
