New York At Night Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACBDBDD AEAEEFEFF AAAAAGAGG AHAHIJHKK

A near horizon whose sharp jagsA
Cut brutally into a skyB
Of leaden heaviness and cragsA
Of houses lift their masonryC
Ugly and foul and chimneys lieB
And snort outlined against the grayD
Of lowhung cloud I hear the sighB
The goaded city gives not dayD
Nor night can ease her heart her anguished labours stayD
-
Below straight streets monotonousA
From north and south from east and westE
Stretch glittering and luminousA
Above one tower tops the restE
And holds aloft man's constant questE
Time Joyless emblem of the greedF
Of millions robber of the bestE
Which earth can give the vulgar creedF
Has seared upon the night its flaming ruthless screedF
-
O Night Whose soothing presence bringsA
The quiet shining of the starsA
O Night Whose cloak of darkness clingsA
So intimately close that scarsA
Are hid from our own eyes BeggarsA
By day our wealth is having nightG
To burn our souls before altarsA
Dim and tree shadowed where the lightG
Is shed from a young moon mysteriously brightG
-
Where art thou hiding where thy peaceA
This is the hour but thou art notH
Will waking tumult never ceaseA
Hast thou thy votary forgotH
Nature forsakes this man begotI
And festering wilderness and nowJ
The long still hours are here no jotH
Of dear communing do I knowK
Instead the glaring man filled city groans belowK
