A near horizon whose sharp jags	A
Cut brutally into a sky	B
Of leaden heaviness and crags	A
Of houses lift their masonry	C
Ugly and foul and chimneys lie	B
And snort outlined against the gray	D
Of lowhung cloud I hear the sigh	B
The goaded city gives not day	D
Nor night can ease her heart her anguished labours stay	D

Below straight streets monotonous	A
From north and south from east and west	E
Stretch glittering and luminous	A
Above one tower tops the rest	E
And holds aloft man's constant quest	E
Time Joyless emblem of the greed	F
Of millions robber of the best	E
Which earth can give the vulgar creed	F
Has seared upon the night its flaming ruthless screed	F

O Night Whose soothing presence brings	A
The quiet shining of the stars	A
O Night Whose cloak of darkness clings	A
So intimately close that scars	A
Are hid from our own eyes Beggars	A
By day our wealth is having night	G
To burn our souls before altars	A
Dim and tree shadowed where the light	G
Is shed from a young moon mysteriously bright	G

Where art thou hiding where thy peace	A
This is the hour but thou art not	H
Will waking tumult never cease	A
Hast thou thy votary forgot	H
Nature forsakes this man begot	I
And festering wilderness and now	J
The long still hours are here no jot	H
Of dear communing do I know	K
Instead the glaring man filled city groans below	K
