The tall clock is striking twelveA
And the little girls stop in the hall to watch itB
And the big ships rocking in a half circleC
Above the dialC
Twelve o'clockD
Down the side stepsE
Go the little girlsF
Under their big round straw hatsG
Minna's has a pink ribbonH
Stella's a blueI
That is the way they know which is whichJ
Twelve o'clockD
An hour yet before dinnerK
Mother is busy in the still roomL
And Hannah is making gingerbreadM
-
Slowly with lagging stepsE
They follow the garden pathN
Crushing a leaf of box for its acrid smellO
Discussing what they shall doI
And doing nothingP
-
Stella see that grasshopperK
Climbing up the bankQ
What a jumpR
Almost as long as my armS
Run children runH
For the grasshopper is leaping awayT
In half circle curvesU
Shuttlecock curvesU
Over the grassesV
Hand in hand the little girls call to himW
Grandfather grandfather grayT
Give me molasses or I'll throw you awayT
-
The grasshopper leaps into the sunlightX
Golden greenY
And is goneZ
-
Let's catch a beeA2
Round whirl the little girlsF
And up the gardenH
Two heads are thrust among the Canterbury bellsB2
ListeningP
And fingers clasp and unclasp behind backsC2
In a strain of silenceD2
-
White bellsB2
Blue bellsB2
Hollow and reflexedX
Deep tunnels of blue and white dimnessB2
Cool wine tunnels for beesB2
There is a floundering and buzzing over Minna's headX
-
Bend it down Stella Quick QuickE2
The wide mouth of a blossomF2
Is pressed together in Minna's fingersB2
The stem flies up jiggling its flower bellsB2
And Minna holds the dark blue cup in her handX
With the beeA2
Imprisoned in itX
Whirr Buzz BumpR
Bump Whiz BangG2
BANGG2
The blue flower tears across like paperK
And a gold black bee darts away in the sunshineH2
-
If we could fly we could catch himW
The sunshine is hot on Stella's upturned faceB2
As she stares after the beeA2
We'll follow him in a dove chariotX
Come on StellaI2
Run childrenH
Along the red gravel pathsB2
For a bee is hard to catchJ2
Even with a chariot of dovesB2
-
Tall still and cowledX
Stand the monk's hoodsB2
Taller than the heads of the little girlsB2
A blossom for MinnaI2
A blossom for StellaI2
Off comes the cowlK2
And there is a purple painted chariotX
Off comes the forward petalC
And there are two little green dovesB2
With green traces tying them to the chariotX
Now we will get in and fly right up to the cloudsB2
Fly Doves up in the skyL2
With Minna and meA2
After the beeA2
-
Up one pathN
Down anotherK
Run the little girlsB2
Holding their dove chariots in front of themM2
But the bee is hidden in the trumpet of a honeysuckleC
With his wings folded along his backN2
-
The dove chariots are thrown awayT
And the little girls wander slowly through the gardenH
Sucking the salvia tipsB2
And squeezing the snapdragonsB2
To make them gapeO2
I'm so hotX
Let's pick a pansyA2
And see the little man in his bathN
And play we're heA2
A royal bath tubP2
Hung with purple stuffs and yellowQ2
The great purple yellow wingsB2
Rise up behind the little red and green manR2
The purple yellow wings fan himW
He dabbles his feet in cool greenY
Off with the green sheathS2
And there are two spindly legsB2
Heigho sighs MinnaI2
Heigho sighs StellaI2
There is not a flutter of windX
And the sun is directly overheadX
-
Along the edge of the gardenH
Walk the little girlsB2
Their hats round and yellow like cheesesB2
Are dangling by the ribbonsB2
The grass is a tumult of buttercups and daisiesB2
Buttercups and daisies streaming awayT
Up the hillT2
The garden is purple and pink and orange and scarletX
The garden is hot with coloursB2
But the meadow is only yellow and white and greenY
Cool and long and quietX
The little girls pick buttercupsB2
And hold them under each other's chinsB2
You're as gold as Grandfather's snuff boxB2
You're going to be very rich MinnaI2
Oh o o Then I'll ask my husband to give me a pair of garnet earringsB2
Just like Aunt Nancy'sB2
I wonder if he willT2
I know We'll tell fortunesB2
That's what we'll doX
Plump down in the meadow grassB2
Stella and MinnaI2
With their round yellow hatsB2
Like cheesesB2
Beside themM2
DropU2
DropU2
Daisy petalsB2
One I loveV2
Two I loveV2
Three I love I sayB2
The ground is peppered with daisy petalsB2
And the little girls nibble the golden centresB2
And play it is cakeW2
-
A bell ringsB2
Dinner timeX2
And after dinner there are lessonsB2
