Before the Altar bowed he standsA
With empty handsA
Upon it perfumed offerings burnB
Wreathing with smoke the sacrificial urnB
Not one of all these has he givenC
No flame of his has leapt to HeavenC
Firesouled vermilion heartedD
Forked and dartedE
Consuming what a few spare penceF
Have cheaply bought to fling from henceF
In idly asked petitionC
-
His sole conditionC
Love and povertyG
And while the moonH
Swings slow across the skyI
Athwart a waving pine treeG
And soonH
Tips all the needles thereJ
With silver sparkles bitterlyG
He gazes while his soulK
Grows hard with thinking of the poorness of his doleK
-
Shining and distant Goddess hear my prayerJ
Where you swim in the high airJ
With charity look down on meG
Under this treeG
Tending the gifts I have not broughtL
The rare and goodly thingsM
I have not soughtL
Instead take from me all my lifeN
-
Upon the wingsM
Of shimmering moonbeamsO
I pack my poet's dreamsO
For youP
My wearying strifeN
My courage my lossQ
Into the night I tossQ
For youP
Golden DivinityG
Deign to look down on meG
Who so unworthilyK
Offers to youP
All life has knownR
Seeds withered unsownR
Hopes turning quick to fearsS
Laughter which dies in tearsT
The shredded remnant of a manR
Is all the spanR
And compass of my offering to youP
-
Empty and silent II
Kneel before your pure calm majestyG
On this stone in this urnR
I pour my heart and watch it burnR
Myself the sacrifice but beG
Still unmoved DivinityG
-
From the altar bathed in moonlightU
The smoke rose straight in the quiet nightU
