Cross hatchings of rain against grey walls	A
Slant lines of black rain	B
In front of the up and down wet stone sides of buildings	C
Below	D
Greasy shiny black horizontal	E
The street	F
And over it umbrellas	G
Black polished dots	H
Struck to white	I
An instant	J
Stream in two flat lines	K
Slipping past each other with the smoothness of oil	L
Like a four sided wedge	M
The Custom House Tower	N
Pokes at the low flat sky	O
Pushing it farther and farther up	P
Lifting it away from the house tops	Q
Lifting it in one piece as though it were a sheet of tin	R
With the lever of its apex	S
The cross hatchings of rain cut the Tower obliquely	T
Scratching lines of black wire across it	U
Mutilating its perpendicular grey surface	V
With the sharp precision of tools	W
The city is rigid with straight lines and angles	X
A chequered table of blacks and greys	X
Oblong blocks of flatness	X
Crawl by with low geared engines	X
And pass to short upright squares	X
Shrinking with distance	X
A steamer in the basin blows its whistle	E
And the sound shoots across the rain hatchings	X
A narrow level bar of steel	Y
Hard cubes of lemon	Z
Superimpose themselves upon the fronts of buildings	X
As the windows light up	P
But the lemon cubes are edged with angles	X
Upon which they cannot impinge	A2
Up straight down straight square	B2
Crumpled grey white papers	X
Blow along the side walks	X
Contorted horrible	E
Without curves	X
A horse steps in a puddle	E
And white glaring water spurts up	P
In stiff outflaring lines	X
Like the rattling stems of reeds	X
The city is heraldic with angles	X
A sombre escutcheon of argent and sable	E
And countercoloured bends of rain	B
Hung over a four square civilization	Z
When a street lamp comes out	C2
I gaze at it for fully thirty seconds	X
To rest my brain with the suffusing round brilliance of its globe	D2
