Cross hatchings of rain against grey wallsA
Slant lines of black rainB
In front of the up and down wet stone sides of buildingsC
BelowD
Greasy shiny black horizontalE
The streetF
And over it umbrellasG
Black polished dotsH
Struck to whiteI
An instantJ
Stream in two flat linesK
Slipping past each other with the smoothness of oilL
Like a four sided wedgeM
The Custom House TowerN
Pokes at the low flat skyO
Pushing it farther and farther upP
Lifting it away from the house topsQ
Lifting it in one piece as though it were a sheet of tinR
With the lever of its apexS
The cross hatchings of rain cut the Tower obliquelyT
Scratching lines of black wire across itU
Mutilating its perpendicular grey surfaceV
With the sharp precision of toolsW
The city is rigid with straight lines and anglesX
A chequered table of blacks and greysX
Oblong blocks of flatnessX
Crawl by with low geared enginesX
And pass to short upright squaresX
Shrinking with distanceX
A steamer in the basin blows its whistleE
And the sound shoots across the rain hatchingsX
A narrow level bar of steelY
Hard cubes of lemonZ
Superimpose themselves upon the fronts of buildingsX
As the windows light upP
But the lemon cubes are edged with anglesX
Upon which they cannot impingeA2
Up straight down straight squareB2
Crumpled grey white papersX
Blow along the side walksX
Contorted horribleE
Without curvesX
A horse steps in a puddleE
And white glaring water spurts upP
In stiff outflaring linesX
Like the rattling stems of reedsX
The city is heraldic with anglesX
A sombre escutcheon of argent and sableE
And countercoloured bends of rainB
Hung over a four square civilizationZ
When a street lamp comes outC2
I gaze at it for fully thirty secondsX
To rest my brain with the suffusing round brilliance of its globeD2
