HoopsB
-
Blue and pink sashesC
Criss cross shoesD
Minna and Stella run out into the gardenE
To play at hoopF
-
Up and down the garden paths they raceG
In the yellow sunshineH
Each with a big round hoopF
White as a stripped willow wandI
-
Round and round turn the hoopsB
Their diamond whiteness cleaving the yellow sunshineH
The gravel crunches and squeaks beneath themJ
And a large pebble springs them into the airK
To go whirling for a foot or twoL
Before they touch the earth againM
In a series of little jumpsN
-
Spring HoopsB
Spit out a shower of blue and white brightnessO
The little criss cross shoes twinkle behind youL
The pink and blue sashes flutter like flagsP
The hoop sticks are ready to beat youL
Turn turn Hoops In the yellow sunshineH
Turn your stripped willow whitenessO
Along the smooth pathsQ
-
Stella singsR
'Round and round rolls my hoopF
Scarcely touching the groundS
With a swoopF
And a boundS
Round and roundS
With a bumpety crunching scattering soundS
Down the garden it fliesT
In our eyesT
The sun liesT
See it spinU
Out and inU
Through the paths it goes whirlingV
About the beds curlingV
Sway now to the loopF
Faster faster my hoopF
Round you comeW
Up you comeW
Quick and straight as beforeX
Run run my hoop runE
Away from the sun '-
-
And the great hoop bounds along the pathY
Leaping into the wind bright airK
-
Minna singsR
'Turn hoopF
Burn hoopF
Twist and twineH
Hoop of mineH
Flash alongZ
Leap alongZ
Right at the sunE
Run hoop runE
Faster and fasterA2
Whirl twirlB2
Wheel like fireA2
And spin like glassC2
Fire's no whiterA2
Glass is no brighterA2
DanceD2
PranceD2
Over and overA2
About and aboutE2
With the top of you underA2
And the bottom at topF2
But never a stopF2
Turn about hoop to the tap of my stickG2
I follow behind youL
To touch and remind youL
Burn and glitter so white and quickG2
Round and round to the tap of a stick '-
-
The hoop flies along between the flower bedsH2
Swaying the flowers with the wind of its passingV
-
Beside the foxglove border roll the hoopsB
And the little pink and white bells shake and jingleI2
Up and down their tall spiresJ2
They roll under the snow ball bushK2
And the ground behind them is strewn with white petalsL2
They swirl round a cornerA2
And jar a bee out of a Canterbury bellM2
They cast their shadows for an instantN2
Over a bed of pansiesO2
Catch against the spurs of a columbineH
Jostle the quietness from a cluster of monk's hoodP2
Pat Pat behind them come the little criss cross shoesD
And the blue and pink sashes stream out in flappings of colourA2
-
Stella singsR
'Hoop hoopF
Roll alongZ
Faster bowl alongZ
HoopF
Slow to the turningV
Now go GoQ2
QuickG2
Here's the stickG2
Rat a tap tap itR2
Pat it flap itR2
Fly like a bird or a yellow backed beeS2
See how soon you can reach that treeS2
Here is a path that is perfectly straightT2
Roll along hoop or we shall be late '-
-
Minna singsR
'Trip about slip about whip aboutE2
HoopF
Wheel like a top at its quickest spinU
Then dear hoop we shall surely winU
First to the greenhouse and then to the wallU2
Circle and circleI2
And let the wind push youL
Poke youL
Brush youL
And not let you fallU2
Whirring you round like a wreath of mistV2
Hoopety hoopF
TwistV2
Twist '-
-
Tap Tap go the hoop sticksW2
And the hoops bowl along under a grape arbourA2
For an instant their willow whiteness is greenX2
Pale white greenX2
Then they are out in the sunshineH
Leaving the half formed grape clustersY2
A tremble under their big leavesZ2
-
'I will beat you Minna ' cries StellaA3
Hitting her hoop smartly with her stickG2
'Stella Stella we are winning ' calls MinnaA3
As her hoop curves round a bed of clove pinksB3
A humming bird whizzes past Stella's earA2
And two or three yellow and black butterfliesT
Flutter startled out of a pillar roseC3
Round and round race the little girlsD3
After their great white hoopsB
-
Suddenly Minna stopsE3
Her hoop wavers an instantN2
But she catches it up on her stickG2
'Listen Stella '-
Both the little girls are listeningV
And the scents of the garden rise up quietly about themJ
'It's the chaise It's FatherA2
Perhaps he's brought us a book from Boston '-
Twinkle twinkle the little criss cross shoesD
Up the garden pathY
Blue pink an instant against the syringa hedgeF3
But the hoops white as stripped willow wandsG3
Lie in the grassC2
And the grasshoppers jump back and forthH3
Over themJ

-
Battledore and ShuttlecockV
-
The shuttlecock soars upwardI3
In a parabola of whitenessO
TurnsJ3
And sinks to a perfect arcV
Plat the battledore strikes itR2
And it rises againM
Without hasteK3
Winged and curvingV
Tracing its white flightL3
Against the clipped hemlock treesO2
PlatL3
Up againM
Orange and sparkling with sunE
Rounding under the blue skyV
DroppingV
Fading to grey greenX2
In the shadow of the coned hemlocksO2
'Ninety one ' 'Ninety two ' 'Ninety three '-
The arms of the little girlsO2
Come up and upM3
PreciselyS2
Like mechanical toysO2
The battledores beat at nothingV
And toss the dazzle of snowQ2
Off their parchment drumsO2
'Ninety four ' PlatL3
'Ninety five ' PlatL3
Back and forthH3
Goes the shuttlecockV
Icicle whiteL3
Leaping at the sharp edged cloudsO2
OverturningV
FallingV
DownN3
And downN3
Tinctured with pinkV
From the upthrusting shineH
Of Oriental poppiesO2
-
The little girls sway to the counting rhythmW
Left footL3
Right footL3
Plat PlatL3
Yellow heat twines round the handles of the battledoresO2
The parchment cracks with drynessO2
But the shuttlecockV
Swings slowly into the ice blue skyV
Heaving up on the warm airA2
Like a foam bubble on a waveO3
With feathers slanted and sustainingV
HigherA2
Until the earth turns beneath itL3
Poised and swingingV
With all the garden flowing beneath itL3
Scarlet and blue and purple and whiteL3
Blurred colour reflections in rippled waterA2
Changing streamingV
For the moment that Stella takes to lift her armP3
Then the shuttlecock relinquishesO2
BowsO2
DescendsO2
And the sharp blue spears of the airA2
Thrust it to earthQ3
-
Again it mountsO2
Stepping up on the rising scents of flowersO2
Buoyed up and under by the shining heatL3
Above the foxglovesO2
Above the guelder rosesO2
Above the greenhouse glitterA2
Till the shafts of cooler airA2
Meet itL3
Deflect itL3
Reject itL3
Then downN3
DownN3
Past the greenhouseO2
Past the guelder rose bushK2
Past the foxglovesO2
-
'Ninety nine ' Stella's battledore springs to the impactL3
Plunk Like the snap of a taut stringV
'Oh Minna '-
The shuttlecock drops zigzagedlyS2
Out of orbitL3
Hits the pathY
And rolls over quite stillS2
Dead white feathersO2
With a weight at the endL3

-
Garden GamesO2
-
The tall clock is striking twelveR3
And the little girls stop in the hall to watch itL3
And the big ships rocking in a half circleS2
Above the dialS2
Twelve o'clockV
Down the side stepsO2
Go the little girlsO2
Under their big round straw hatsO2
Minna's has a pink ribbonE
Stella's a blueS2
That is the way they know which is whichS3
Twelve o'clockV
An hour yet before dinnerA2
Mother is busy in the still roomT3
And Hannah is making gingerbreadL3
-
Slowly with lagging stepsO2
They follow the garden pathY
Crushing a leaf of box for its acrid smellS2
Discussing what they shall doS2
And doing nothingV
-
'Stella see that grasshopperA2
Climbing up the bankV
What a jumpU3
Almost as long as my arm '-
Run children runE
For the grasshopper is leaping awayV3
In half circle curvesO2
Shuttlecock curvesO2
Over the grassesO2
Hand in hand the little girls call to himW3
'Grandfather grandfather grayV3
Give me molasses or I'll throw you away '-
-
The grasshopper leaps into the sunlightL3
Golden greenX2
And is goneX3
-
'Let's catch a bee '-
Round whirl the little girlsO2
And up the gardenE
Two heads are thrust among the Canterbury bellsO2
ListeningV
And fingers clasp and unclasp behind backsO2
In a strain of silenceO2
-
White bellsO2
Blue bellsO2
