The lion remembers the forestA
The lion in chainsB
To the bird that is captive a visionC
Of woodland remainsB
-
One strains with his strength at the fetterD
In impotent rageE
One flutters in flights of a momentF
And beats at the cageE
-
If the lion were loosed from the fetterD
To wander againG
He would seek the wide silence and shadowH
Of his jungle in vainI
-
He would rage in his fury destroyingJ
Let him rage let him roamK
Shall he traverse the pitiless mountainC
Or swim through the foamK
-
If they opened the cage and the casementH
And the bird flew awayL
He would come back at evening heartbrokenC
A captive for ayeM
-
Would come if his kindred had spared himN
Free birds from afarO
There was wrought what is stronger than ironP
In fetter and barO
-
I cannot remember my countryQ
The land whence I cameR
Whence they brought me and chained me and made meQ
Nor wild thing nor tameR
-
This only I know of my countryQ
This only repeatH
It was free as the forest and sweeterD
Than woodland retreatH
-
When the chain shall at last be brokenC
The window set wideH
And I step in the largeness and freedomS
Of sunlight outsideH
-
Shall I wander in vain for my countryQ
Shall I seek and not findH
Shall I cry for the bars that encage meQ
The fetters that bindH
