Saint Peter sat at the jasper gateA
When Stephen M White arrived in stateA
-
'Admit me ' 'With pleasure ' Peter saidB
Pleased to observe that the man was deadB
-
'That's what I'm here for Kindly showC
Your ticket my lord and in you go '-
-
White stared in blank surprise Said heD
'I run this place just turn that key '-
-
'Yes ' said the Saint and Stephen heardE
With pain the inflection of that wordE
-
But mastering his emotion heD
Remarked 'My friend you're too d freeD
-
'I'm Stephen M by thunder White '-
And 'Yes ' the guardian said with quiteF
-
The self same irritating stressG
Distinguishing his former yesG
-
And still demurely as a mouseH
He twirled the key to that Upper HouseH
-
Then Stephen seeing his bluster vainI
Admittance to those halls to gainI
-
Said neighborly 'Pray tell me PeteJ
Does any one contest my seat '-
-
The Saint replied 'Nay nay not soC
But you voted always wrong belowC
-
'Whate'er the question clear and highK
You're voice rang ' I ' ' I ' ever ' I ''-
-
Now indignation fired the heartL
Of that insulted immortal partL
-
'Die wretch ' he cried with blanching lipM
And made a motion to his hipM
-
With purpose murderous and heartyD
To draw the Democratic partyD
-
He felt his fingers vainly slideN
Upon his unappareled hideN
-
The dead arise from their 'silent tents'C
But not their late habilimentsC
-
Then wailed the briefest of his speechesC
'I've left it in my other breeches '-
