Two Rogues Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFEGGHHIEJJ KKLLMNGGOOHHPE

Dim grim and silent as a ghostA
The sentry occupied his postA
To all the stirrings of the nightB
Alert of ear and sharp of sightB
A sudden something sight or soundC
About above or undergroundC
He knew not what nor where ensuedD
Thrilling the sleeping solitudeD
The soldier cried 'Halt Who goes there 'E
The answer came 'Death in the air 'E
'Advance Death give the countersignF
Or perish if you cross that line 'E
To change his tone Death thought it wiseG
Reminded him they 'd been alliesG
Against the Russ the Frank the TurkH
In many a bloody bit of workH
'In short ' said he 'in every weatherI
We've soldiered you and I together 'E
The sentry would not let him passJ
'Go back ' he growled 'you tiresome assJ
Go back and rest till the next warK
Nor kill by methods all abhorK
Miasma famine filth and viceL
With plagues of locusts plagues of liceL
Foul food foul water and foul gasesM
Rank exhalations from morassesN
If you employ such low alliesG
This business you will vulgarizeG
Renouncing then the field of fameO
To wallow in a waste of shameO
I'll prostitute my strength and lurkH
About the country doing workH
These hands to labor I'll devoteP
Nor cut by Heaven another throat 'E
