Swains and maidens young and oldA
You to me this tale have toldA
-
Where the squalid town of DaeB
Irks the comfortable seaC
Spreading webs to gather fishD
As for wealth we set a wishD
Dwelt a king by right divineE
Sprung from Adam's royal lineE
Town of Dae by the seaC
Divers kinds of kings there beC
-
Name nor fame had PicklepipF
Ne'er a soldier nor a shipF
Bore his banners in the sunG
Naught knew he of kingly sportH
And he held his royal courtH
Under an inverted tunG
Love and roses ages throughI
Bloom where cot and trellis standJ
Never yet these blossoms grewI
Never yet was room for twoI
In a cask upon the strandJ
-
So it happened as it oughtK
That his simple schemes he wroughtK
Through the lagging summer's dayB
In a solitary wayB
So it happened as was bestL
That he took his nightly restL
With no dreadful incubusC
This way eyed and that way tressedL
Featured thus and thus and thusC
Lying lead like on a breastL
By cares of State enough oppressedL
Yet in dreams his fancies rudeL
Claimed a lordly latitudeL
Town of Dae by the seaC
Dreamers mate above their stateL
And waken back to their degreeC
-
Once to cask himself awayB
He prepared at close of dayB
As he tugged with swelling throatL
At a most unkingly coatL
Not to get it off but onG
For the serving sun was goneG
Passed a silk appareled spriteL
Toward her castle on the heightL
Seized and set the garment rightL
Turned the startled PicklepipF
Splendid crimson cheek and lipF
Turned again to sneak awayB
-
But she bade the villain stayB
Bade him thank her which he didL
With a speech that slipped and slidL
Sprawled and stumbled in its gaitL
As a dancer tries to skateL
Town of Dae by the seaC
In the face of silk and laceC
Rags too bold should never beC
-
Lady Minnow cocked her headL
'Mister Picklepip ' she saidL
'Do you ever think to wed '-
Town of Dae by the seaC
No fair lady ever made aM
Wicked speech like that to meC
-
Wretched little PicklepipF
Said he hadn't any shipF
Any flocks at his commandL
Nor to feed them any landL
Said he never in his lifeN
Owned a mine to keep a wifeN
But the guilty stammer soC
That his meaning wouldn't flowC
So he thought his aim to reachO
By some figurative speechO
Said his Fate had been unkindL
Had pursued him from behindL
How the mischief could it elseC
-
Came upon him unawareP
Caught him by the collar thereP
Gushed the little lady's gleeC
Like a gush of golden bellsC
'Picklepip why that is me '-
Town of Dae by the seaC
Grammar's for great scholars sheC
Loved the summer and the leaC
-
Stupid little PicklepipF
Allowed the subtle hint to slipF
Maundered on about the shipF
That he did not chance to ownG
Told this grievance o'er and o'erQ
Knowing that she knew beforeR
Told her how he dwelt aloneG
Lady Minnow for replyS
Cut him off with 'So do I '-
But she reddened at the fibC
Servitors had she ad libC
Town of Dae by the seaC
In her youth who speaks no truthT
Ne'er shall young and honest beC
-
Witless little PicklepipF
Manned again his mental shipF
And veered her with a sudden shiftL
Painted to the lady's thoughtL
How he wrestled and he wroughtL
-
Stoutly with the swimming driftL
By the kindly river broughtL
From the mountain to the seaC
Fuel for the town of DaeB
Tedious tale for lady's earU
From her castle on the heightL
She had watched her water knightL
Through the seasons of a yearV
Challenge more than met his viewI
And conquer better than he knewI
Now she shook her pretty pateL
And stamped her foot 't was growing lateL
'Mister Picklepip when IS
Drifting seaward pass you byS
When the waves my forehead kissC
And my tresses float aboveW
Dead and drowned for lack of loveW
You'll be sorry sir for this '-
And the silly creature criedL
Feared perchance the rising tideL
Town of Dae by the seaC
Madam Adam when she had 'emX
May have been as bad as sheC
-
Fiat lux Love's luminationI
Fell in floods of revelationI
Blinded brain by world aglareV
Sense of pulses in the airV
-
Sense of swooning and the beatingY
Of a voice somewhere repeatingY
Something indistinctly heardL
And the soul of PicklepipF
Sprang upon his trembling lipF
But he spake no further wordL
Of the wealth he did not ownI
In that moment had outgrownI
Ship and mine and flock and landL
Even his cask upon the strandL
Dropped a stricken star to earthZ
Type of wealth and worldly worthZ
Clomb the moon into the skyS
Type of love's immensityL
Shaking silver seemed the seaC
Throne of God the town of DaeL
Town of Dae by the seaC
From above there cometh loveW
Blessing all good souls that beC
