Off Santa Cruz the western waveA
Was crimson as with bloodB
The sun was sinking to his graveA
Beneath that angry floodB
-
Sir Walter Turnbull brave and stoutC
Then shouted 'Ho lads runD
The powder and the ball bring outC
To fire the sunset gunD
-
'That punctual orb did ne'er omitE
To keep by land or seaF
Its every engagement itE
Shall never wait for me '-
-
Behold the black mouthed cannon standG
Ready with charge and primeH
The lanyard in the gunner's handG
Sir Walter waits the timeH
-
The glowing orb sinks in the seaF
And clouds of steam aspireI
Then fade and the horizon's freeF
Sir Walter thunders 'Fire '-
-
The gunner pulls the lanyard partsJ
And not a sound ensuesK
The beating of ten thousand heartsJ
Was heard at Santa CruzK
-
Off Santa Cruz the western waveA
Was crimson as with bloodB
The sun with visage stern and graveA
Came back from out the floodB
