''Tis a woeful yarn ' said the sailor man boldA
Who had sailed the northern lakesB
'No woefuler one has ever been toldA
Exceptin' them called 'fakes ''C
-
'Go on thou son of the wind and fogD
For I burn to know the worst '-
But his silent lip in a glass of grogD
Was dreamily immersedE
-
Then he wiped it on his sleeve and saidF
'It's never like that I drinksG
But what of the gallant gent that's deadF
I truly mournful thinksG
-
'He was a soldier chap leastwaysG
As 'Colonel' he was knewH
An' he hailed from some'rs where they raiseG
A grass that's heavenly blueH
-
'He sailed as a passenger aboardI
The schooner 'Henery Jo '-
O wild the waves and galeses roaredI
Like taggers in a showJ
-
'But he sat at table that calm an' mildK
As if he never had letL
His sperit know that the waves was wildK
An' everlastin' wetL
-
'Jest set with a bottle afore his noseG
As was labeled 'Total Eclipse'G
The bottle was an' he frequent roseG
A glass o' the same to his lipsG
-
'An' he says to me for the steward slickM
Of the 'Henery Jo' was IN
'This sailor life's the very old NickM
On the lakes it's powerful dry '-
-
'I says 'Aye aye sir it beats the DutchO
I hopes you'll outlast the trip '-
But if I'd been him an' I said as muchO
I'd 'a' took a faster shipP
-
'His laughture loud an' long an' freeQ
Rang out o'er the tempest's roarR
'You're an elegant reasoner ' says heQ
'But it's powerful dry ashore ''-
-
'O mariner man why pause and donS
A look of so deep concernT
Have another glass go on go onS
For to know the worst I burn '-
-
'One day he was leanin' over the railU
When his footing some way slippedV
An' this is the woefulest part o' my taleU
He was accidental unshippedV
-
'The empty boats was overboard hoveW
As he swum in the 'Henery's wake'M
But 'fore we had 'bouted ship he had droveW
From sight on the ragin' lake '-
-
'And so the poor gentleman was drownedV
And now I'm apprised of the worst '-
'What him 'Twas an hour afore he was foundV
In the yawl stone dead o' thirst '-
