When I was young and full of faithA
And other fads that youngsters cherishB
A cry rose as of one that saithA
With emphasis 'Help or I perish 'C
'Twas heard in all the land and menD
The sound were each to each repeatingE
It made my heart beat faster thenD
Than any heart can now be beatingE
-
For the world is old and the world is grayF
Grown prudent and I think more wittyG
She's cut her wisdom teeth they sayF
And doesn't now go in for PityG
Besides the melancholy cryH
Was that of one 'tis now concededI
Whose plight no one beneath the skyH
Felt half so poignantly as he didI
-
Moreover he was black And yetJ
That sentimental generationK
With an austere compassion setJ
Its face and faith to the occasionK
Then there were hate and strife to spareL
And various hard knocks a plentyG
And I 'twas more than my true shareL
I must confess took five and twentyG
-
That all is over now the reignM
Of love and trade stills all dissensionsF
And the clear heavens arch againD
Above a land of peace and pensionsF
The black chap at the last we gaveN
Him everything that he had cried forO
Though many white chaps in the graveN
'Twould puzzle to say what they died forO
-
I hope he's better off I trustP
That his society and his master'sF
Are worth the price we paid and mustP
Continue paying in disastersF
But sometimes doubts press thronging roundQ
'Tis mostly when my hurts are achingE
If war for Union was a soundQ
And profitable undertakingE
-
'Tis said they mean to take awayF
The Negro's vote for he's unletteredQ
'Tis true he sits in darkness dayQ
And night as formerly when fetteredQ
But pray observe howe'er he voteQ
To whatsoever party turningE
He'll be with gentlemen of noteQ
And wealth and consequence and learningE
-
With saints and sages on each sideQ
How could a fool through lack of knowledgeR
Vote wrong If learning is no guideQ
Why ought one to have been in collegeS
O Son of Day O Son of NightQ
What are your preferences made ofT
I know not which of you is rightQ
Nor which to be the more afraid ofT
-
The world is old and the world is badQ
And creaks and grinds upon its axisF
And man's an ape and the gods are madQ
There's nothing sure not even our taxesF
No mortal man can Truth restoreO
Or say where she is to be sought forO
I know what uniform I woreO
O that I knew which side I fought forO
