Goddess of Liberty O thouA
Whose tearless eyes behold the chainB
And look unmoved upon the slainB
Eternal peace upon thy browA
-
-
Before thy shrine the races pressC
Thy perfect favor to imploreD
The proudest tyrant asks no moreD
The ironed anarchist no lessC
-
-
Thine altar coals that touch the lipsE
Of prophets kindle too the brandF
By Discord flung with wanton handF
Among the houses and the shipsE
-
-
Upon thy tranquil front the starG
Burns bleak and passionless and whiteH
Its cold inclemency of lightH
More dreadful than the shadows areG
-
-
Thy name we do not here invokeI
Our civic rites to sanctifyJ
Enthroned in thy remoter skyJ
Thou heedest not our broken yokeI
-
-
Thou carest not for such as weK
Our millions die to serve the stillL
And secret purpose of thy willL
They perish what is that to theeK
-
-
The light that fills the patriot's tombM
Is not of thee The shining crownN
Compassionately offered downN
To those who falter in the gloomM
-
-
And fall and call upon thy nameO
And die desiring 'tis the signP
Of a diviner love than thineP
Rewarding with a richer fameO
-
-
To him alone let freemen cryJ
Who hears alike the victor's shoutQ
The song of faith the moan of doubtQ
And bends him from his nearer skyJ
-
-
God of my country and my raceR
So greater than the gods of oldS
So fairer than the prophets toldS
Who dimly saw and feared thy faceR
-
-
Who didst but half reveal thy willL
And gracious ends to their desireT
Behind the dawn's advancing fireT
Thy tender day beam veiling stillL
-
-
To whom the unceasing suns belongU
And cause is one with consequenceV
To whose divine inclusive senseW
The moan is blended with the songU
-
-
Whose laws imperfect and unjustX
Thy just and perfect purpose serveY
The needle howsoe'er it swerveY
Still warranting the sailor's trustX
-
-
God lift thy hand and make us freeK
To crown the work thou hast designedZ
O strike away the chains that bindZ
Our souls to one idolatryK
-
-
The liberty thy love hath givenA2
We thank thee for We thank thee forD
Our great dead fathers' holy warD
Wherein our manacles were rivenA2
-
-
We thank thee for the stronger strokeI
Ourselves delivered and incurredB2
When thine incitement half unheardB2
The chains we riveted we brokeI
-
-
We thank thee that beyond the seaK
Thy people growing ever wiseC2
Turn to the west their serious eyesC2
And dumbly strive to be as weK
-
-
As when the sun's returning flameO
Upon the Nileside statue shoneD2
And struck from the enchanted stoneD2
The music of a mighty fameO
-
-
Let Man salute the rising dayE2
Of Liberty but not adoreD
'Tis Opportunity no moreD
A useful not a sacred rayE2
-
-
It bringeth good it bringeth illL
As he possessing shall electF2
He maketh it of none effectF2
Who walketh not within thy willL
-
-
Give thou more or less as weK
Shall serve the right or serve the wrongU
Confirm our freedom but so longU
As we are worthy to be freeK
-
-
But when O distant be the timeG2
Majorities in passion drawH2
Insurgent swords to murder LawH2
And all the land is red with crimeG2
-
-
Or nearer menace when the bandF
Of feeble spirits cringe and pleadI2
To the gigantic strength of GreedI2
And fawn upon his iron handF
-
-
Nay when the steps to state are wornJ2
In hollows by the feet of thievesK2
And Mammon sits among the sheavesK2
And chuckles while the reapers mournJ2
-
-
Then stay thy miracle replaceR
The broken throne repair the chainB
Restore the interrupted reignB
And veil again thy patient faceR
-
-
Lo here upon the world's extremeL2
We stand with lifted arms and dareM2
By thine eternal name to swearM2
Our country which so fair we deemL2
-
-
Upon whose hills a bannered throngU
The spirits of the sun displayE2
Their flashing lances day by dayE2
And hear the sea's pacific songU
-
-
Shall be so ruled in right and graceR
That men shall say 'O drive afieldN2
The lawless eagle from the shieldN2
And call an angel to the place '-
