Foundations Of The State Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDEEFFGGHIJJJJKK LLMMNNOOFF PPJJQQRRS

Observe dear Lord what lively pranksA
Are played by sentimental cranksA
First this one mounts his hinder hoofsB
And brays the chimneys off the roofsC
Then that one with exalted voiceD
Expounds the thesis of his choiceD
Our understandings to bombardE
Till all the window panes are starredE
A third augments the vocal shockF
Till steeples to their bases rockF
Confessing as they humbly nodG
They hear and mark the will of GodG
A fourth in oral thunder ventsH
His awful penury of senseI
Till dogs with sympathetic howlsJ
And lowing cows and cackling fowlsJ
Hens geese and all domestic birdsJ
Attest the wisdom of his wordsJ
Cranks thus their intellects deflateK
Of theories about the StateK
This one avers 'tis built on TruthL
And that on Temperance This youthL
Declares that Science bears the pileM
That graybeard with a holy smileM
Says Faith is the supporting stoneN
While women swear that Love aloneN
Could so unflinchingly endureO
The heavy load And some are sureO
The solemn vow of Christian WedlockF
Is the indubitable bedrockF
-
Physicians once about the bedP
Of one whose life was nearly spedP
Blew up a disputatious breezeJ
About the cause of his diseaseJ
This that and t' other thing they blamedQ
'Tut tut ' the dying man exclaimedQ
'What made me ill I do not careR
You've not an ounce of it I'll swearR
And if you had the skill to make itS
I'd see you hanged before I'd take it '-
